Holiday rights and mean spirits

Does an employer have the right to tell an employee about to embark on a fortnight's annual leave that they may be in touch during the second week if things get too busy back at the office? It's the first break I've taken in an entire year and I've worked damn hard, I always do. Yet this is what was said to me today. I'm angry. What are my rights?

Well I do know that in the financial services sector, employees can be forced to 10 days holidays consecutively. This is a regualtion that has to be applied.

To answer your question, unless you are a high-level manager or you agreed in your contract to on call at all times(like executives), then they shouldn't be allowed contact you.

Try the Organisation of Working Times Act 1997.

No they can't. You are on leave, they have agreed your leave, but now they are effectively asking you to be on call. Unless there is something in your contract that mentions this i'd tell them you won't be answering any phonecalls from work.

Meant to say, it might be an idea to approach it gently as they can probably revoke your annual leave and tell you you have to work for those two weeks....
