Myself and a few mates are on the island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand. Last night, two of them got mugged, money belts taken and one passport was robbed.
(He's kinda screwed, ATM, credit cards gone, everything.)

Anyone know what the story is with the embassy in Bangkok? How long it takes to get an emergency passport? Anyone been through it? (We've eight days left in our holiday, and don't want to have to hang around in Bangkok longer than necessary!)

perhaps they ditched the passport when they realised, otherwise they may use it for identity theft, why else would they take it? probably just grab and run. Anyway not really sure but contact the hotel or whatever that you are with and they should be able to point you in the right direction. hope u get sorted out.

Is this a joke? Your friend's passport has been stolen and instead of contacting the embassy immediately, you post on boards?

Please tell me you see the problem here.

Yes, he's gone off on a boat to get to a phone to contact the embassy. We (i.e. the rest of us) were just planning, and we needed to know how this would affect our plans!

I'm not sure. The idiot forgot to ask them.

Right I lost my passport before in another contry, and here's what to do.

Firstly contact the nearest Irish consulate or embassy if there's none in the country contact the English one. Explain the situation to them I'm sure its not the first Pasport ever stolen in the country and they'll be well able tell you what to do.

Then go to the nearest police station and get a police report of the theft you'll need this for tour emergency passpost(Emergency Passpost only lasts 1 month.)

    Get 2 passport photos.

Have some form of Id ie Driving licence or debit card

If flight tickets were stolen contact the airline and make arrangements.

Emergency passport costs about 10 euro's but may have to be posted to you and the information posted posted to them. It might be best to wait util you get to Bangkok and they'll issue the pastport straight away.

I know its a pain in the arse and the thai police may not be most corteous or there english the best but I guess its the only way if you want to get out of the country.

    Thanks!

The situation resolved itself, the passport was actually discovered later in the day, but thanks for your info all the same - good to get a positive response!
