As mentioned in another thread, where you wear your guitar has an effect on how you play. So, how high do you wear yours?

Bass: Nipple tickler. Tim Commerford style

Usually fairly low, about 80 to 100% strap fully extended. No point in trying to sound good if you don't look cool

I have to agree - lower IS cooler - how about a new category: Knee Pad ?

i'd rather look like steven hawking and play like clapton than look like a cool bastartd and play like a fish (contrary to common beliefs fish have no fingers)

Well, in order to rest your nuts on the guitar, it'd have to be pretty damn low anyway...

jcoote - I think you have beautifully summarised the great existential dilemma than all guitarists must someday face.

(Although I'd rather look cool since TBH there's no chance of me playing like Clapton - :p )

I've my guitar pretty much the same height as Kirk Hammett (in fairness, I did copy him for my first few years of playing) and that looks grand on me. Give it to my mate who's 6'4 and it's at his nipples. If I use his Explorer, it's lying on my feet :p

Mine generally covers my hips and crotch kinda region. It's low, but doesn't inhibit my playing.

Nut rest if I can pm, otherwise, belly hider I suppose.

Yep, obviously if its hanging around your ankles its a bit tough to go up and down the fretboard... thats why you need to throw some shapes and move the guitar around as you play. I find the "straight out in front shooting the crowd with a shotgun" is a good move to bring the guitar up a bit.

    Belly Hider
I voted nipple tickler, but after checking, it's really more of a belly hider. I find I play my 7 String a little higher up though.

A word of warning to people who like their guitars dangling between their knees... That can give you some serious problems like tendonitis, which can completely cripple your guitar playing ability. Not exactly a good thing, and it can happen fairly easy... So make sure your technique is comfy.

I'd say slightly higher than the "belly hider" option implies.

    And the bass higher again.

top of guitar at belly button level... which option is that? :)

Karl Hungus is blatantly just jealous of all these legends with their cool looking guitar positions, when he can't play for crap unless his guitar is nestled up against his breasts ;)

I'm a low-ish belly hider myself, though I tend to alternate between having the guitar horizontal and sloped up to the left while I play, depending on what I'm playing obviously.

Ever see Matt Heafy from Trivium play? He knows where it's at. Stand with your legs ridiculously bent to reach the mic stand that's two feet too short for you (Hetfield style) with your low slung Les Paul between your legs like a Spanish guitar. Then, when it's solo time, point that headstock at the sky baby, vertical all the way!

    Belly Hider
I'm a nipple-tucking guy, me. Always wanted to say that.

Unfortunately, I'm 6'3" and slim, so looking gawky is always a concern. I may lower it a tad, but probably not all the way to belly-hider. Somebody mention the proportion of arms to body. Is there really that much difference between people? That's not a hypothetical question! I know that I have long thin fingers myself, so I can picture people's hands being different sizes / proportions.

"I know that I have long thin fingers" - Makes me sound like The Grinch.

Yeah, my hand looks wierd when I'm playing rythym, just chugging away like, it's like a big slab of meat flying up and down over the strings..

Big guitars always make it a little better though..

Nut rest. It makes it easier on my right hand, so that i dont have to bend my elbow too much, but the bass is positioned slightly more vertically than usual so it compensates the fretting hand. But the high frets, who needs em
