    Hi All

I have 2 external harddrives but windows xp won't recognize both of them at the same time.

Both are USB plug and play drives. If you only have one plugged in the computer will recognize this drive but when you plug the second one you get the sound as if it is going to come up then nothing.

The 2nd drive shows on boot up and in the bios setup menu, but is not visible once I start Windows XP ?

Anyone know what could be wrong ?

    Thanks
    John

How other usb devices do you have plugged in?

Do you have them both pllugged in right beside each other on adjacent usb connectors? If you do, try plugging them into usb connectors which are on different headers like plugging one in at the rear of the pc and the other in to a usb connection on the front of the pc (if you have these). These would on likely be on different parts of the usb controller so it may act differently.

I don't have any other USB devices plugged in but the 2 hard drives.

I tried plugging them in at the side and the back and all manner of other conbinations ............. but its still the same.

One thing i forgot to mention that maybe of importance they are both the exact same type( i mean like model and make) of hard drive just one is an 80GB and the other is a 160GB harddrive.

Are they pwered via USB or do they both have external power supplies?
AFAIK there is a limit to the amount of power a USB port can supply.
My external drive comes with a special "double adapter type" USB cable to draw power from two seperate USB ports in case one can't supply enough juice.
