Does anyone else here like the White Stripes.
At first they were really hard to listen to but a few times listening to Elephant and it really grows on you. Especially Jack Whites voice and raw guitar.
    What does everyone else think?

I think they are terrible. His voice annoys me and Meg's drumming is laughable.

I detest them, seriously overhyped, about as good as tits on a bull!!

I don't really mind them, but why does the piano in their new song sound like the Futurama theme

I like them :D , I went to their concert in Marlay Park last summer and it was really good.

They're fierce dodgy...saw them live (on tv...) and meg was signin' n playin the marimba...it was worse than terrible, it was agonizing. Then she sat down behind the kit n had to keep 4/4 on the hats...was runnin round the beat faster than roadrunner!
Apparently they're "contemporary musicians playing rock music"...what a load of s**t

The live shows are something alright...I saw Jack stop in the middle of a song, play another song and then resume the song he had originally started. Madness!

    Legends.

Who cares about Megs drumming. You dont think people want to listen to the frickin drums. yeah she's outta time. Who gives a $hit. What 'Jack' can do with a guitar is the sweetest sound ive ever heard. If you dont like it change the channel.

OK theyre not a full shilling but give them credit for what theyve become, without major sponsorship deals etc(jury is still out on the coke thing). Five nights on Conan O Brien, co-producing albums with Loretta Lynn and Brendan Benson to name a couple.

'making their sh!te sound decent'...open your ears fella

Are you mad?! If she's out of time, he's out of time, and so therefore the band is out of time. Any musician, especially a drummer, should be disgusted by that alone. Also the fact that she comes up with purely repetitive beats for virtually every song is insulting.
So he has the sweetest sound you've ever heard? Possibly the rawest I've ever heard, like a dodgy garage band (although to be fair i haven't paid much attention to him live..)
Yes I do change the channel, but this is an open discussion, so I'll say my bit because I'm allowed to (and cause I can). And my ears are wide open, but sadly the white sh*tes are something that insults them.

I know this will sound dumb but anyway...
I just think Meg looks wrong when shes drumming... just doesnt look right... far too stoned or something, like shes not really a drummer but just some bird hitting drums while stoned...
wierd I know but there ya go

I really like them. Yes Meg is hardly the world's greatest drumer but it suits the songs perfectly. If you're offended by easy drumming and *gasp* going out of time occassionally yet still sounding better then all the **** drummers in half cocked metal bands then simply don't listen. They write great, catchy songs and are a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the radio trash.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 424 ✭✭the_obsolete

Actually i'm happy with repetitive drum beats...except when the same beat is used in every single song. I dislike **** drumming when it doesn't suit the music. Also drummers aren't meant to go out of time, that's why they're drummers, to lock the rest of the band together. And it isn't occasionally, it's frequentley. Good drum sound can't cover up a bad drummer, it can only compliment a good drummer.
As my big sis says, they sound good the first time you hear them, but the more you listen the more repetitve they appear.
And there's plenty of somewhat refreshing things on the radio, the blite sh*tes just ain't one of 'em.
Finally how many times will I have to say this, I don't listen to them any more, but this is an open discussion so I can express my opinion about them as I see fit.

i think they get better the more you listen to them and unlike other band s they get better as they go along.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 424 ✭✭the_obsolete

Well that wouldn't be very difficult now would it...

most bands end up repeating and rushing their albums after their first.

    Musicians? Just guessing.

I'm rather fond of, I used to have White Blood Cells and there are some class tunes on it.

I like em, wouldn't call them a favourite or anything but they always have a few top drawer tunes on their albums.

I can understand why Meg's juvenile drumming would get on people's nerves but it doesn't bother me too much tbh. I like the contrast with Jack's guitarooing.

Do you need to put other things down in order to validate what you like?

Personally, I don't like the White Stripes. I've said before why these kinds of bands don't do anything for me, so I won't bother posting up again about it, but if you're interested, click here.

Couldn't have said it better, Karl. I have a strong distaste for the White Stripes. Contemporary Musicians playing rock music? Pah. I don't think one who would class themselves a contemporary musician would play a style/genre that is not only done to death but stylistically/creatively limiting, especially when they technically can barely play in 4/4 time. Which is why I believe they're actually two chancers from some swamp that Michael Stapp and a few other "contemporaries" blew massively out of proportion and made a tidy sum from it all.

He the one resposnsible for them? If so...he must burn....

No. I merely used that example because the majority of people posting against the White Stripes gave me the impression that if you're not a **** drummer, you're not a real drummer. And a lot of mediocre metal bands have a lot of musicians (not just drummers) that try and compensate for poor songwriting by trying to include unusual timings and over-egged playing. I'm not attacking metal as a genre, as you well know I do love a lot of metal bands who do play in a technical way but that suits what they play, much like the amateur and child-like drumming suits the White Stripes.

That's not a very nice thing to say as I know it's aimed at me. I have never once mentioned anything about genre, style, or difficulty of playing, I simply said that she's useless as a drummer. One of my favourite drummers is Roger Taylor (that's Queen's RT...), a man who played what was required for the music, which was for the most part simple as poo, but was rarely the same...unlike meg who churns out virtually the same beat for each and every song. And please don't tell me that's fine, because that suggests that all the rhythms in the songs are virtually the same. Originality in music is key, which sadly she lacks.
If ya wanna hear a decent guitar, vocal and drums combo, check out the Ya Ya Ya's.

Actually it was aimed at no one in particular, sorry if you feel singled out. I stand by my opinion that I think Meg's drumming suits the music. I think that by adding in more intricate drumming you lose the innocent edge that the White Stripes have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 424 ✭✭the_obsolete

I wouldnt suggest a more intricate drummer, just a more original drummer....i hate to say it but somebody like yer man fom the strokes (i don't much like him either but hey, more original blah blah blah). This is why I hate the majority of dance music- it's the same bass-then-hats combo in a helluva lotta songs...drives me up the bloody walls! (well plus it just sounds terrible anyways)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

What about bands like Kraftwerk? The beats are repetitive but that's the point. It's machine music, you're meant to get locked in a groove and dance like a mofo. Or just dance :)

i HATE the white stripes, in fact i take pleasure in despising them...

u know by now u would've thought that their musical skill might have accidentally improved but oh my god no!!! they're still possibly the most useless pathetic musicians on the go...
