Just bought a PSP and it's charging beside me. I think it comes with the 1.52 firmware.... is homebrew available on 1.52 or should I go ahead and update it to 2.0.

Have to say it's very nice looking in person, the screen is massive!

I'm in the same bracket (not charing it yet in work. Should've called in sick!)

How do you tell what version it is?

Is it hard to set up the homebrew on it. Some of the features of 2.0 look ok but I wouldnt use them all.

Whats the main advanatages/disadvantages of upgrading?

WAB are set to release a downgrader today so that you can get 1.52 to back to 1.5 and run homebrew so dont upgrade.

    www.wab.com

The homebrew's usually pretty easy to get onto it. Just a matter of copying and pasting a couple of directories onto your memory stick.

The ability to play games that you wouldn't normally be able to play on your PSP: Megadrive games/SNES games etc.

    http://www.pspupdates.com/

Check on the right hand side of that page under "categories". It pretty much lists all the homebrew apps available apart from the ISO loaders which, of course, are illegal.

There's stuff like emulators for snes, nes, gameboy, MAME.
VNC for the PSP to control you PC from the psp.

    Random other stuff.

my brother who got his psp today, and he dosent know anything about firmware put in the demo disk by accident,
it was going to update it automatically but it was low on battery, and quit,
so i checked that its still 1.52, so yeah dont put it in if you want to keep
    1.52 firmware.

If you dont have a wireless router, 2.0 isnt much use to you atm and no games require it yet. So unless you really want the browser i'd stick with 1.52 for the time being.

no browser on 1.52!!! so thats sly automatically updating when you put the demo in!

The browser is useless anyway. No java or flash support.
    Useless.

When you insert the disc it doesn't update automatically. You have to choose the option

    This, i can confirm.

Aye, it appears as an option, like the firmware that comes with wipeout

OOPS: I updated by accident. How stupid am I?

Anyway, it told me that I needed the AC adaptor to be plugged in: Anyone else have this problem?

Hardly an accident if they made you plug it in before updating.

Screw it, I updated it as there are some extra features.

there's a browser in some games anyway

the demo disk will not automatically update your psp
you have to select the update option from the UMD menu on the home menu

then it will only update if your ac adaptor is plugged in

i got mine on friday and i updated it (i havemt bought any games yet, only rented)
the update also allows you to view bmp and png files as photos on your memory stick
