Buying a pool table

okay people, I am planning on setting up a games room in the house.... and would love to put in a nice pool table. Money is an issue, so can't be too expesive. It is also in an attic conversion, so getting it up there may be a problem.

I have done a lot of searching on the net, and I can either get a second hand slate table or a new decent non-slate table. I see remarks about the non-slate tables saying that they are crap, or they are not real pool tables... but nobody has explained the reasons for this. I can't find info on it anywhere. (I know there are issues with denting and warping over time - but this will prob only be used for a few years) .

Does anyone know if the play on these tables is up to scratch. One of the tables I am thinking of is the 7' Deluxe American Blackcat Pool Table

anyone know if this is good etc....

any other advice on buying a pool table?

For €637 that is a sweet deal! Go for it, its a brilliant table, they have them in a pool hall near me. Far better then playing on a pub table.

really? thats great news.... i would have thought a pool hall would have all slate tables?
The price is excellent, and I doubt i would find even a low end second hand slate for that price...

Well if you wanted the best pool table then obviously slate would be the choice but its really pricey. This one does the job and it'll be hard to notice the difference. It'll be a lot lighter too, so it'll be much handier to get it up to your attic. It shouldn't dent as long as you're not chipping the cue ball all the time( make that a rule!)

    no chipping... got it :D

ill have to find out if I can get it up to the attic... if there's no problem there i think ill go for it alright....

the weight is 150Kgs which is still pretty heavy. And I would be worried about the ease of assembly as well... as the delivery is literally to the door.. I sent an email so hope to hear something back....

I'm sure you could just take the table top off the legs as a whole. That'd get rid of say at least 1/4 of the weight. Hopefully you'll have enough room to maneuver it!

no worries with the room to manouver it... i reckon the room is about 25 X 15. Havent measured, but its a very big attic. Its getting it up the small narrow stairs to the attic thats going to prove a problem......

    hey zapho,
just wondering... since your the only guy that I know played on this table. I see that it has the american size balls coming with it... ie 2 1/4". This I assume means that it has the huge pockets as well. What is it like playing a table as small as 7X4 with these big balls and pockets.

I mean the usual american tables Ive played on have been 9 X 5... which is a hell of a lot bigger...

Hi jimbling thanks for putting up the link to this site. They certainly offer good deals. I am seriously considering going for

    http://www.edirectory.ie/ir/pages/moreinfoa.asp?pe=BGJJIDGQ_+6+pool+table+with+ball+return&cid=10000

    or this..

    http://www.edirectory.ie/ir/pages/moreinfoa.asp?pe=BGJJIEIQ_+6+pool+table+with+table+tennis+top&cid=10000

My room is 10'11" x 12'8" (there are doors into the sitting room which increase this length) - I think with 4' cues this will be adequate but perhaps other people can confirm this..

What are EDirectory like to deal with? I never heard of them before..

    Cheers

How much room would you have to give yourself around the table in order to play on it properly Jibbling?

Well, I'm not Jibbling, but I'm going to chip in... had a 7x4 table in my garage for a couple of years, and they need more space than you'd reckon.

To play comfortably with say a 4 foot cue... imagine you're playing the white tight on the top cushion. You need the full cue length more or less at that end. You also need it (obviously) at the other end too. So that's a length of 4+7+4 or 15 feet. Widthwise you need 4+4+4 or 12 feet. (That's to be able to play without resorting to small cues or striking down from a crazy height with your backside against the wall ;)
