Any of your club teams on a roll ?

My local club Charlestown knocked out reigning All Ireland Champions Ballina last weekend, so up against the Mortimer brothers on Sunday in Castlebar in the County Semi-Final.

Charlestown won Connaught in 2002, an extremely young team with only 2 guys over 30, including 9 U-21's, and were beaten by Nemo Rangers where Colm Corkery scored every single point  and they wuz robbed !!

Spent 2 years on the beer then, but seem to be back on track to give it a lash again this year.

Yep, lost 10 games in a row this season. Ten years ago they lost in the Ulster club final in very dubious circumstances and have been going downhill ever since. Which is a pity, cause at under-age they've been very strong, but it all goes wrong after minor

Who's your team? Mine is Lavey. We lost two of our three intermediate group games. We were happy just to beat our neighbours and local rivals Laragh though, and consigning them to a relegation play off felt even better.

Our last success was winning the Cavan Junior title two years ago (we're one of the smallest parishes in the county) and we went to the Intermediate semi last year.

Are Charlestown the crowd that John Casey (ex Mayo forward) played in goals for? They were a nice football side as far as I can remember. Was that the semi final they were beaten in? I don't even think Corkery is playing club football now (not senior anyway).

My club in Kildare is only a Junior club and tbh they are more fond of the drink than the football. But I do think that if they did give it a lash they would be challenging for Intermediate never mind Junior.

    Yeh, the very same.

Excellent football team, were very young in 2002, and Corkery used all his experience to win it for Nemo. The Charlestown backs were too niave, and Corkery kept winning the frees, and slotting them over the bar.

Was very frustrating as Charlestown played them off the pitch, but Nemo kept lumpping the ball on top of Corkery who played the young fellahs like a fiddle.

Yes, they lost the All Ireland semi down in Nenagh

I remember it now ok. Wasn't there a documentary on the Charlestown team that year? Can't remember the name of it but t'was a great programme. The manager or coach was a small fellow and I think he was a school teacher.

Bailieborough. Won the U-21 title 1992-1994 and the Senior in 1995. Nothing since. Teams seem to massively collapse after Minor, with players leaving town and quitting. Half the current side is in America or London.

Yes, that was it. That manager was in my class in school, only 34 now, probably the most skillful gaelic footballer I ever seen, but never grew an inch after 14 years of age.

    I'm impressed Hawker !

I know them well, I played against them a few times at underage level in the mid to late 90s.

I'm a football man through and through. Love the game. But living in East Cork is tough because it's all hurling country. They don't want to know about football which is fair enough I suppose.

It was a very good documentary if you were a GAA fan. Was it a club member that did it?

Ah, a Bailieborough man and a Lavey man. I knew you lot weren't from the other side of the county for some reason. I know a good few of the lads on the Bailieborough team, they're a sound bunch of lads. Terrible to see them going downhill so fast but its mainly due to the fact that they're out on the piss non stop. They'll always have a few good players coming through but its a matter of keeping them under wraps.

Lavey, good team we played them the year they won the Junior Championship but they didn't really seem bothered with the league. Pity we didn't make the final instead of those wasters from Mountnugent. I'd say there might have been a better final if we did. Good to see them holding their own in the IC.

My own club Shercock are currently in the Junior Championship semi this weekend, against Redhills. Should be a tough game as they have a few decent players and one exceptional player. Don't know which way it will go but we'll give it our all after what happened last year. We had a good win over Mountnugent last weekend beating them by 17 points, the first time we actually played well all year. Hopefully we can carry it on into the game on Saturday.

Our minors are going pretty well too. They are in the Division 2 semi final and should be favourites to win it. There are some really good players on the team and all but three of the panel are under age for next year. Should be interesting!

    Yeh most of it.

and you want to know the most ironic thing about it ( 28064212 please note).

Charlestown hadn't won one single championship game for the previous 7 years, yet nearly went all the way (should have), so to have it all on camera was freaky.
