Well spotted....racism is alive and well!

I would post some Gathering card and yell "discuss it yourself ya noob" but I just can't be arsed.

    I see your point, but....

Bear in mind that the first article is sourced from AFP and the second from Associated Press. It could simply be the case that two different sources refer to it as finding or looting in general. Unless Associated Press refer elsewhere to white people finding, as opposed to looting, you can't really accuse them of being (directly) racist.

I have to say though, the similarity between the pictures is incredible.

It's tricky to say if using a picture of a black person in a story about looting is racist, because intentionally not using a picture of a black person in any story is certainly racist.

Looking at the pictures, the white people (altough one of the looks hispanic, or maybe half black) have scraps. It could easily be said that they found it floating amongst the debris from a grocery shop and took it to survive. The black guy has a crate of pepsi and a big black bag full of god knows what, it's a little different to a girl with a sliced pan.

The two "white" people have rusksacks... could be full of looted material.

The "black" guy could have all his possesions in the black bag as he knows it's waterproof.

I suppose there are numerous ways to look at it.

Still I deem it bad reporting.

    Dunno about this one.

As angryman pointed out, they're 2 different sources, so you cant really label it as racist.

Technically they both looted, AFP may have just decided to make it sound less sinister due to the situation.

    Two different sources
One say looting other says finding.
Neither mention colour, social group whatever.
    You however do!
Nothing racist in either picture, just you linking them and then adding your own white black labelling.

It does seem unconciously racist to me. Saying that they might have written by two different people doesn't really excuse it imho. I'm sure they probably both went past the same person for their perusal before the finally landed up on the yahoo site.

Also the fact that it says the white people had to 'wade' and the black guy only had to 'walk' somehow gives more nobility to the cause of the whites.

Still at least we didn't get "Picture #3 : Korean storeowner flucking mad cos everyone is robbing his glocery shop."

The stories weren't written for yahoo though.

Yahoo are using stories from other sites, so there was no common person between the two stories to edit them.

I hadn't really considered that, I suppose there's potentially lots of different mitigating circumstances going on that neither story reports. I think it's a bit unfair to jump to the conclusion of racism though, for e.g. it's quite possible the second reporter saw the black guy looting but only got a picture of him leaving. It's also possible one or both of the photographers are black. There's far too little information to come to a definitive conclusion that racism is involved.

These two pieces have no connection as far as writers go.
I guess it could be a news outlet policy, like how the BBC (controversially) advise writers against the use of the word terrorist as it is unhelpful to the situation, or something.

There is nothing racist here what so ever
Two seperate sources, entirely end of story.

The OP added or implied racism when they labelled the pictures and thus linked them with

    White People find
    Black People loot

It's OP implied racism and nothing more. Descriptions within each picture said nothing about race or creed etc.
Besides I count 3 ethic backgrounds in those pics and not just some misinformed black white divide.

I agree with ADUB? I don't see anything but bias inentionally added by the OP here. Neither article makes any kind of sweeping rascist statement. The looting picture could be true, the photographer may have observed the subject of the photo looting a shop and then took the photo. The subject's nationality might have nothing to do with it.

Personally I'm dubious as to why this thread was started in the first place, I don't see anything to discuss other than the OP trying to force a conversation on rascism in the press.
