Can some recommend a good travel insurance I can buy online to cover camera etc while on holiday?
Roughly how much does it cost? Also if I had to claim on it how do you prove you had the item, do you have to produce a receipt or something to the insurance company?

I used www.justcover.ie and got it worldwide for me and my girlfriend for €57 for a year. Better value to do it for the year i think rather than single trips.

    Didn't have to claim fortunately

I recently used getcover.com and it cost me €12 to cover a 1 week trip.

If you're making a claim you do need to provide a pre-dated receipt or valuation so get that sorted before you go, just in case.

Whatever you do, dont just buy insurance.

check what it covers For example if you have to cancel a holiday because someone going with you cant go,you are usually not covered unless you specify that.
Examples would include a death or an illness for instance. If the person who has died or who is injured is not related to you then they wont pay you
The insurance company gets to keep the premium of course but they won't pay out unless it's specified.

Between Getcover and Ace, ther is very little on the proce but the cover on the Getcover policy is much better, excess is higher 2(85 as opossed to 75)

Ace provide the AIB policies and are cheaper than AIB for the same pcover.

It's very important to look at what the policy covers

I had a quick look at justcover.ie and it is seams to be more expensive and not as good cover as getcover.com

I have the VHI travel insurance. They don't pay out more than 250 euro (i think thats it) on any one single personal item.

I claimed for a camera last year and i needed, the receipt from when i bought it and a police report detailing what happened (it was nicked). The camera cost 400 euro when i bought it 3 years ago (3.2 megapixels digital camera). They would only give me back 120 euro on it cos they reckon its not worth any more than that now.

    IMO

Getcover.com or Getcover.ie same difference will make you wish you never had a holiday if you have to claim.

A "pre-dated" receipt is just the sort of thing that they screw you on - for example if the receipt doesn't have your name - "oh I'm sorry sir but that could be anybodys receipt" etc etc.

The claims are handled by a seperate company in Galway and they screwed me over last year to save themselves a couple hundred euro on a policy that I took out with them that cost me 400 euro (extended trip).

    Really?

Well I was fortunate enough not to have to make a claim. Mainly chose them because they seemed the best value and because they were recommended by a friend who's used them several times before (not sure if my friend ever had to make a claim though).

I recently took a single trip policy out with them for a trip to the us in two weeks time. They emailed me today saying that my VHI policy doesn't pay the first €65,000 excess required should anything happen. €65,000 isn't a lot in American medical terms. Anyway they never made that clear or anything when i was buying the damn thing. So i emailed them and told them cancel the whole thing and refund me. Basically avoid these as they are very unprofessional and looks dodgy tbh.
