I'm going over a tab at the moment and it's got this chord in it. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fret it? The tab is in standard tuning. I can do it by leaving out the E strings or the B string but if anyone has a trick or technique that would allow me to play the whole chord i'd appreciate it.

Barred second fret with your first finger

Little finger on the 5th fret

    Ring finger 4th fret

    Middle finger 3rd fret

or else stick a capo on the 2nd fret ;)

You'd have to be wearing your guitar pretty high for this one :p

Little finger on the 5th fret
It's hard to fret 2 frets with your baby finger..

Just leave out the root... The bassist should fill that in for you...

    Hard but far from impossible.

That's the problem I'm facing with it.

I guess I just need to practice using the little finger to do it then.

@kawaii, it's a solo piece so that's not an option unfortunately.

Wait... my advice doesn't help at all...

Try leaving out one of the minor sixths...

    Doc,

Wish I could use a capo but there's open strings as well and I don't think I could get it on quick enough. Can you give any advice on getting your little finger to just fret two strings? when I try it I end up muting the G string.

    kawaii,

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd like to play the whole chord if possible. If not I'll leave out a string.

Learn about "economy" fingering - for wont of a better word.
That same chord can be played in many different positions across the neck. Find one which is more comfortable and more "economical" for your fingers and play that instead.

You still be getting all the notes, you'd just be leaving out an octave of one...

It's your choice, my way or Doc's...

/edit/ or Ancients if you can find an easier voicing...

Well I dunno about you, but I can bend my fingertips back slightly on their joints, about 30 degrees or so. I've been using my little finger to barre two strings ever since I started playing. That's the only way i can see to play that chord.

Yeah I would barre the fifth fret with my pinky.

That might be more difficult for him though, depending on the action/gauge of the strings...

Unfortunately both of my suggestions leave out the F# bassline. But they may help you out.

    You could do as Ancient1 suggested and play the same chord elsewhere. Try this fingering instead;

    |-X-|
    |-12-|
    |-11-|
    |-12-|
    |-10-|
    |-10-|

    That's D over Gmaj7.
    Alternatively, to finger the original chord without breaking your pinky, try;

    |-2-| - thumb - bring it underneath the fretboard
    |-3-| - index
    |-4-| - middle
    |-5-| - pinky
    |-5-| - ring
    |-X-|

It's technically the same chord as you're playing all the right notes, just not the low F#.

    Lmao!

    ;)

    LOL also :)

    How about [2 x 0 0 0 2]?
    Or [12 9 12 12 12 10]?

Dont have geetahr, so dunno what theyś sound like.
Same notes. Weird sound Id imagine.
Im a big fan of the school of close enough. Id play the root and/or the distinctive notes and leave the bass fill. Whichever sounds best.

Alternatively could this tab be wrong? Vast majorìty of tabs have some kind of mistake.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I can't seem to get my little finger to that yet so in the meantime muting the D string sounds close enough to my ears.

    Paladin,

Your first suggestion was pretty good, thanks.

I recommend muting the A string instead.

Sorry yeah you're right, I meant the A string.

Im only a bassist, but a chord with both F# and G in the same chord sounds like a typo???

It may seem a little unorthodox I know. But you'll find it's a lot quicker than trying to use your pinky to cover the two strings, without messing it up.

I find I accidently mute the 4th string everytime as I don't have the ability to bend my pinky back far enough.

At least try the chord before passing judgement.

I thought he was laughing at the fact you specified putting your thumb under the fretboard. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,327 ✭✭✭kawaii

...which would require fretting the note with your nail or something...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 175 ✭✭TheStrandRoads

Some people are dexterous in different ways. Sure I think being able to bar the two notes in this chord with your pinky as near impossible, yet Doctor J can do this.

Obviously this position is not for standing, but using the classical sitting position. having your left foot (if you're a right handed guitarist) raised ever so slightly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

It'd be much easier just to learn to barre two frets with your pinky, you'd be using this technique in apreggios aswell. It's not a difficult chord to play.

The thumb thing doesn't help play the full chord so it's useless.

    Horrible picture:

What exactly are you going to do when you have the chord held down: Picking? Strumming?

You could use your right index finger to bar across the second fret, then the four fingers of your left hand to hold the other notes. This would have to be done with a hefty hammer on with both hands but could look spectacular, ...not any worse than the thumb idea anway

    |-2-| - index
    |-3-| - index
    |-4-| - middle
    |-5-| - pinky
    |-5-| - ring
    |-2-| - thumb

might be slightly easier to try barring the second and third fret.... just a thought... it also depends on the context of the chord, i.e. what chords precede and follow it, consider that and try all the suggestions given and go for the one that you find easiest to change to and from... its upto you at the end of the day
