Slimline DVD Writer

Anyone know if I can buy one that would fit the Dell i6000? The one that came with it is norked. It'll burn CD's no problem but won't write DVD's though it will read them. The laptop is still under warranty at only 3 months old, but I'm not sure if I can be bothered dealing with Dell's Customer Care after hearing the stories on here.

I have had a look around for slimline DVD writers but haven't come up with anything. The one that is in it now is a Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A. Reading up on that model I have found that it seems to be that particular brand/model of writer that is causing problems yet Dell insist on using it. I have flashed my BIOS with the latest version and updated my firmware but still no joy. Also the Sonic software I got with the computer wouldn't install either as it was missing one of the msi packages.

    Any help appreciated.

You must be able to earn money a lot quicker than I am, if it is easier for you to get a new drive than bother making a phone call. Fair play.

Dell's customer support can be bad alright (and great too if you get put onto NI or Scotland), but if there is a problem they will fix it...

Was just the fact that I had heard that you can be stuck on the phone for hours trying to get it sorted which sounds kinda expensive especially dialling from a mobile. Sure I may aswell give it a go if it is only a few of the service centres are sh!te. Cheers. Worst case scenario though what would be a good replacement for the drive as I am happy with the rest of the laptop and would rather not get rid of it.

Look for a freephone number. :)

I have the same drive in a i2200, and it works, although I have only burned a few disks so far (come to think of it, it burned one really slow: Im going to watch it like a hawk now). Looking though google the drive does seem to have its issues alright.

I have a NEC DVD+RW drive in a latitude laptop and it has worked fine for the past year, no coasters or nothing.

Sweet. Cheers Maidhc. So basically most slimline burners should fit the i6000 anyway I take it. Last resort though if I can't get Dell to sort it. Here's hoping I'm one of the lucky few who get good support. :)
