Bad sector on DVD; help...

I'm backing up a friend's R1 dvd so he can watch it on his region locked player, using DVDshrink 3.2.
During decoding, the process aborted telling me there was an error, so I tried opening it using DVDdecrypter....no dice. Seems like there is a bad sector. I opened it in ISO buster (free version) and extracted the file...during this process I get a warning that several bad sectors were encountered and I opted to Ignore them....the extracted VOB plays with a very pixellated image and is unsuitable for viewing or encoding.

However when I play the original disc, the episode plays fine with just a minor skip of about a minute...I've exmained the disc and it has a small scratch from centre to edge.

Is there a way to repair the extracted VOB? Or can anyone think of another way I could rip or encode this episode and simply have the process exclude the bad data? Any help much appreciated.

Not sure about a software solution, bit if the scratch isn't too deep you could try rubbing it with a cloth and toothpaste to wear it down. Worked for me a couple of times.

As it's not my disc, that's gonna have to be a last ditch solution...but noted anyway thx.

If you use ISO buster and get it to replace the damaged sectors with random data it usually does a better job. I've used it a good few times now for scratched discs myself.

Totally OT: Muckwarrior, does that work on glass too?

Is that only available in the full version? If not, where is it in the free/trial use version?

I've been giving this some thought and was thinking maybe I could divX the entire disc then use WINavi to turn it back into VOB...I know it's a long winded method and I loose a bit of quality, but would the divX encoding process choke on bad sectors too?

DVD dycrypter will do the job for u.
but it will take a few hours.
when it hits a bad block it tries to read it a heap of times when it brings an error say ignore after a few times it will say something like do u want to auto ignore bad blocks.
Do what u wish with the Vobs then

Yeah I've already let decrtpter do it's thing....it gave me an output file that plays very pixellated and artifacted....it would be foolish to waste a DVD on burning it.
I'm just gonna divX it then undivX it....I'm not buying full version of ISO buster that I might never even use again

I highly doubt it. Glass is a hell of a lot harder than plastic!

This happened to me before aswell.
I ended up dumping the DVD with mplayer (command line program) using the -dumpstream option.
Will give you one large .vob file. Then made a divx rip from that.
The mplayer site is currently down at the moment so you might have to wait.
The command would be something like.

    mplayer -dumpstream dvd://1 -dumpfile movie.vob

If you need anymore help on mplayer just ask.

That or try vlc's sout option.

It must be available in the free version 'cos I didn't buy it.

Okay I dug around in the settings and found something that seems to do that. I'll give it a go later.

Ste- if the above doesn't work I'll try your method...

Ok just to update this, an anti static screen wipe cloth rubbed on the scratch combined with the wonders of DVD decrypter fiunally managed to rip the vobs with only one read error. I then shrank the output file and the resulting burned disc is seemingly perfect (so my mate said).
    Thx for all the suggestions...

Ah far quicker and easier thing to do would be to unlock your friends DVD player!
All you need is the remote :)
