    Hi all,

was just interested to know whether people prefer real time strategy or turn based strategy gaming.

I generally prefer turn based strategy as it allows me time to think things through. Add to that my keyboard co-ordination skills (or lack thereof) keeps me away from most real time strategy games.

Although I must say that Dawn of War game was quite enjoyable.

    Personally I have no preference.
When its a RTS game you are on equal footing as other players, shortcut keys are useful but not 100% necessary. Turn based can get a bit boring, especially when you are waiting for your opponent to make a move...

Much prefer turn based myself. From the original Laser Squad, through the X-com games & Battle Isle series and more recently Fallout Tactics. There doesn't seem to be too many turn based games around these days. Last one I got was Advance Wars, which was why I bought a Gameboy. The new AW is also the reason I got a DS

No preference. I like games like Dawn of War and Homeworld 2. However, I also enjoy Civ and Rome. And I always have a special place in my heart for the Worms series.

no preference...i like both alot...but a combo of the two like the total war games is good fun too...

I prefer the whole turn-based, more time to plan your moves. Although I do like hybrids like Total War, or Hearts of Iron.

I prefer turn based, the best I've seen recently is Disciples II and it's add-ons (It's in the style of Heros of Might and Magic, if I got the name right).

But for online multiplayer play RTS does have it's advantages. I don't like rush tactics and the formulatic nature that the opening game of RTS games can devolve into.

I grew up on turn based though, so I think it will always be my favourite because of this.

Anyone here remember Panzer General? :)

while you two transformers fight amongst yourself ^^^ , i will say that generally i prefer rts. For thne out and out excitement of holding off a big onslaught or outwitting an opponent on-the-fly, its great and immediate.

Having said that there are certain charms to games like Silent Storm. It a lot more cerebral and can be quite fulfilling.

Fantasy General - was a sequel using the same engine. Great, great game.

The thing about C&C generals is that all the sides are crap. I remember the Americans being alot more badass in Red Alert 2. They just annoy the **** out of me in Generals. I didn't play the multiplayer or Zero Hour tho, so meh....

Definately turn based. It's more 'pure' strategy if, i can be so bold, then the more aggressive first-click-wins style of RTS. Ok RTS does have some great games C&C, AoE, etc. but in general I like Turn-based better.

    *Resumes playing Fire Emblem*

I think RTs is the best. RTs is fast and really shows a good tactician, because things are done quickly and at fast pace. Whereas turn based you could takes ages deciding on every angle, and it is very boring, and doesnt really make for a good online game anyway.

Whereas something that is RT is the perfect thing for online with fast paced action mixed withsome good skillz. And it also requires good keyboard skills.

RTS for me, Warcraft III:TFT mostly and DoW is damn good too but turn based like chess has much appeal too.

I prefer RTS myself, I don't like Turn based as i find it really boring waiting for the enemy to make their move, it's far more exciting having your base be bombed while you struggle to make AA defences :D

But the Total War series was a bit of both which worked well in my books. ;)

I have no preference, i don't think they're really comparable, you either like the game as is or not, e.g. you couldn't play Warcraft as a turn-based game, or Civ as a RTS.

I love the way TW series does it, best of both worlds TB grand strategy and RT nitty gritty battles, both rely on each other. perfecto.

You're right, they are not comparable.

With due deference to Close Combat and Harpoon (see other thread), I find the better turn based games more enjoyable.

    NTM

I prefer RTS. Like the others I like fast paced action and coming up with ideas and then applying them quickly before your swept away, while he's attacking your base you come in behind his :D

But there are problems with it. I prefer the 5 minute rule that we usualy use during LAN where everyone gets 5 minutest to set up a base before they are alowed attack the enemy. This stops those people who seem to be able to pull units out of their.... bums  .... and makes the game alot more interesting in the long run.

    Phew

But again TB can be pretty sweet if its done right. Weeks of my life have disapeared at the hands of Civ 2. And its still good! Although you can work on things on a much larger scale and you can preform some truly evil manuvers sometimes its nice to watch the nitty gritty of battle and pray that ol johny there, whose been with you the last 10 minutes, can survive and get to a medic :p

No particular preference its like in Rome: Total War or something, a mix is perfect with some grand strategy and some tactical flare
