PC crashes after resume from Standby

I click Start, Turn Off Computer, Standby, the machine goes into standby (I hear the clicking noise and the monitor goes into standby too)
When I press any key or jiggle the mouse to get it out of standby, the monitor comes back on but the screen is all vertical lines and a dark square where the mouse pointer should be, it's frozen and won't accept any keyboard input (Ctrl-AltDelete) or mouse input clicking or moving around.

I'm running: XP Pro with SP2, a few tweaks such as useless services disabled/set to manual
    ATI catylyst 5.8
    Processes:
ZoneAlarm, AVG Control Centre, two mouse related apps
And a connection to IOL ADSL is usually on.

    Anyone have any ideas?
I'm thinking gfx card driver problem or an important service I'm missing.

The usual causes of standby problems are probably old system drivers, or a BIOS problem, have you got the most up-to-date Sys drivers and BIOS?

Standby doesn't work on 90% of PCs.

I haven't ever flashed my BIOS (MSI K8N Neo2 board) because:
    1. I'm too lazy, and
    2. Because it needs a floppy disk to flash it and I don't have a floppy drive
    Why don't I install one?
    See reason 1! :p

What system drivers are ou referring to?
There shouldn't be anything wrong with it, it should be a clean install of my Windows (I have a HD image I use when things get ****ed up, I use it instead of reinstalling XP and all my tweaks and programs)
Standby has nearly always worked for me, this is the first real problem I've had with it. :(

well, yea, update the bios. Standy does work on those boards. Its usually a device driver not letting go of a handle that causes a crash in these circumstances. Does it generate an error report within windows?

Oh I know standby works, it's worked 99% of the time up until now, I have error reports disabled, but I don't think that would matter since it freezes when I bring it out of standby and I have to hit my PC reset button and reboot. :(

Anyway, I've found a LiveUpdate thing on the MSI website that must be new or I've missed before and try update the BIOS.

    Feck.
Not only did the BIOS update fix the Standby problem, now all my previously USB 2.0 ports have gone back to USB 1.0! :(

And the MSI LiveUpdate Monitor still says I need the BIOS update, even though I installed it and it definately said "Update Successful".

    Buggerin buggers.

So I investigated my BIOS settings a bit more and found these menus (I'm not too familiar with BIOS settings)
    dsc004293bg.th.jpg
    dsc004310mv.th.jpg

It was set to S1 (POS) and thats when it locked up on me, resuming from that.
Now, Standby works with S3 (STR) but it powers down the whole system (fans and all) whereas my previous standbys I could still hear the fans whirring.
I know there's different states S1-S3 and possibly more?
I'm not too sure what each one does.

Also, I can resume S3 only by hitting the power button on my PC, not by hitting any key or jiggling the mouse (and I assume that's because they're "Disabled" in the 2nd pic menu)

    And here's the USB situation:
    clipboard021iq.th.jpg
It gives this error when I power on my external HD (which definately is High Speed USB)

I really appreciate any help here, thanks.
