I had laser treatment on my eyes to correct my vision a few months ago, I am just wondering what tax relief I am entitled to, is it 20% or 42%?
    TKS :D

I'd also like to know... (also where, I've heard of people going to other countries to get it done since Ireland is so expensive for it... like most things)

    How's the vision afterwards? 20/20?

Yeah i want all the details please! How did it go? Would you recommend it? I am thinking about getting laser treatment

the only thing i have heard bad about it is that it screws up your nite vision. in germany as part of the driving test you need to do some of the test at nite...and apparently a lot of people who have had the eye surgery are failing this part of the test.

Really? Thanks for that info, i haven't heard about that...but tbh i would sacrifice some nite vision if it meant my vision during the day was excellent

I've had it done and yes your night vision is worse afterwards. Plus there's more of a glare off lights at night, which does make driving a little more awkward. It's nothing major and you quickly get used to it but you do notice it after the operation.

Would heartily recommend it myself - I have better than 20/20 now and not having to worry about glasses/contact lenses is great. Although like "normal sighted" people, I will eventually need reading glasses.

Tax relief for a small thing like this, man this country is a dive, what does this cost here anyways ? I heard laser surgery advertised in New York for $90 an eye. Let me guess the same thing costs a few grand here ?

937 per eye in the paper today...

Yeah but would you really want to **** up your eyes with a bargain bin surgeon? If you want laser eye surgery, don't even think about the price of it - just look for the most experienced and esteemed doctor you can.

    Interesting.

I had laser about 6 years ago and always wondered what the craic with my night vision was.

Re bargain basement surgeons - are you MAD?

Had mine done in the Mater Private as did 4 others in my family.

Yeah don't skimp on something like this. If you want Dr. Nick to do the job for only 99.95 don't start whining when your eyes start to peel.

I went to the Wellington Clinic, they've been doing it the longest in Ireland, have a great reputation, weren't cheap but I wanted the best job done I could get. The Mater Private also have a good rep.

Go to a third world country and you can get fresh eye transplants really cheap, brand new eyes (although it's hit and miss as to how good the eyeballs are).

    1. As far as I remember you get income tax relief on unrecovered medical expenses at the higher rate of income tax that you paid during the year of claim.

You can double check with the revenue on www.revenue.ie

    2. For clarity, could you please specify precisely what procedure you had done ? I ask because there are now quite a number of laser procedures for various eye conditions.

I assume that you are talking about the procedure that fixes short sight ?

I am on the higher tax rate and my wife isn't so if I pay for the treatment can I claim back at 42% rate for her treatment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Can anyone explain how tax relief works? If I pay €400 for x dental treatment, I sent the receipt for this €400, and what..400 is taken from the amount of tax I'm meant to pay? Or is it that €400 of my income is not taxed?

Only in some foreign countries. Also this surgery can be botched and permanantly fusker up your eyes. How does retinal detachment sound? My floaters are headwrecking. Theyr'e getting worse now too. Id take the risk.

Supposedly if you were to get it done its £2,000 per eye.

    Holy ****.

The only way that could be safe is if it was a complete fake.

I think you should be able to. Afaik, you're both seen as the same "unit" for tax purposes. In fact, I think you might have been able to claim some tax back over the years if your wife was a good bit below the 20% cut off (you'd get to use some of her tax credits/allowance).
