    Hi Folks

A dealer friend informs me that Sky have been in contact with him about an upcoming meeting regarding ITV but it is not clear whether this is regarding imminent free to air of same, or availability on Irish cards...has anybody else anything on this?
This guy is normally a reliable source.

    Cheers

If its going to be free to air then why would sky hold a meeting about it ? I guess its trade show time again :)

Didn't realise it was that time again, thought we wern't due another ITV Free rumour thread for another three weeks.

This is probably what it was about..

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4683605.stm
ITV has announced it will launch ITV4 - its new digital channel aimed at men - in November.
He also said the service will "compete head to head with channels using a high proportion of US acquisitions like Sky One, Channel 4 and Five".

OT and maybe not related but a customer told me he tried ordering a UK freesat card yesterday and was told that sky no longer do them, anyone else have a similar experience?

I wonder when the rumor is going to become a reality. probably not unless the go fta.

I wonder when the rumor is going to become a reality. probably not unless the go fta.

well the latest rumour says ITV go FTA in september with no epg listing which tells me that it was not started by a sky ireland source trying to drive sales as sky would have nothing to gain by this. So far nobody will confirm this on the record so I would treat this rumour with great caution.

itv has been in contact about going fta for months but they dont want to fork out £16,000,000 for sky services. It,s bond to happen sooner or later
and talking to a friend of mine in the know says chours contract is runing out with sky as of 31/9/05 and this person who is responalable was in the room when the contract was signed between the two partys as a clause itv can not be shown on sky in ireland so if this runs out I think well be watching itv by x_mas

The clause you refer to has nothing to do with chorus or Sky, it was in the agreement between Granada and TV3 when granada took a stake in TV3 many years ago. This stopped UTV from joining the Sky Ireland package at the time and I'm not aware of any change date wise on this unless TV3 have removed their objection.

sep 1st should be an interesting date as if I understand it right sky/itv encryption contract is a month by month basis. If they are going fta then the would do so on sept 1st just like men and motors went fta on july 1st without any fanfare.

I spoke to someone today who was at the last sky marketing meeting and it seems Mr. Ed Sawday (head of sky marketing for Ireland) said publicly that he thought there was a good chance (50/50) of ITV going FTA in sept with no epg listing. This is interesting in so far as Sky have nothing to gain from this (and a lot to lose) so theres no marketing motivation for saying this.

I guess we will find out in a few weeks. If this comes to pass I will buy everyone here a beer (if you can find out what pub i'm in on the night of the announcement, phoning me on my mobile will disqualify) :)

imagine that, ITV with no EPG placement. deadly

but as with any ITV FTA threads before. i will wait and see what happens

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭channelsurfer

forgive My ignorance but when you see fta without epg listing does that mean it will be available by addding channels or other channels or will it be fta only on fta receivers. also thursday is sept1st so it is gonna happen I would say it will happen thursday.

One thing I've noticed since getting rid of NTL: I don't miss UTV, if it were to go FTA I wouldn't bother tuning it in, on the other hand I'd gladly take Channel 4 even through Other Channels.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

i'd have to agree with you. the only thing that would interest me would be The Bill and CL. if ITV was to appear but not on the EPG i wouldnt care a damn as i can record the bill on ITV3 through the Sky+. Champions League would be handy but not necessary as i have a pub about 10 seconds away from me if i am really stuck

I'd assume what Sawday meant then is perhaps ITV will be FTA the same as BBC but like BBC Three and Four, will only be accessible via Other Channels in ROI, whereas EPG-listed in UK and NI. Or perhaps not...

It'll be a new good selling point for FTA receivers for those with **** reception, only channel missing would be Ch 4.

I had always been waiting for the moment UTV & Channel 4 was on the Irish cards and I would immediatly ditch our NTL Analogue connection. This was until NTL added Setanta to their package and now I have even more access to Premiership games. Having more live games way outstrips having UTV & Channel 4 so NTL analogue will be staying for now. I'd say this could be the same with a lot of people and I'm sure this is one of the reasons why Setanta is free with NTL analogue!

By the way, if the Freesat system £150 incuding the dish and box? Is there not a way to just get the card for a lot cheaper? Is there a cheaper card you can get from the UK?

so what with tomorrow been sept 1st anyone care to make a prediction or guess the odds of itv going fta tomorrow morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 983 ✭✭✭Hercule

Im gonna be a skeptic and say that i doubt we will have it - i have it tuned in on other channels but it is locked for viewing. I have been told dozens of times that it and channel 4 is coming only to be disappointed time and time again you only have to look at when this topic was started to see how long people have been waiting
What really annoys me is that sky got the license to show the rubbish ITV3 but cant show 1 or 2 im sure it will eventually be on sky but its unlikely to be on tommorrow - come on prove me wrong, rupert murdoch!

I think it will be later in the month (if at all) around the 16th. I hope they prove me wrong and go earlier though

I spoke to a buddy of mine who has also confirmed that Ed. Sawday (this week) told him that ITV will more than likely go FTA some time in September .

These guys have made similar statements in the past , fingers crossed .

Thats true but before they were trying to get UTV on sky so no real benefit for sky this time which makes the situation a little different this time.

    Time will tell

If it comes it could do Sky more harm than good , four FTA boxes , a quad LNB and 4 channel terrestrial signal strung together would make for a nice basic multichannel service with no subs , and watch all eight channels at the same time ! ( if you had eight TVs )

fingers crossed I hope it comes to pass although I cant help getting that sneaky feeling that a last minute deal will be done.

Anyone tried yet? Then again I don't know why I care - there's barely anything I ever want to watch on ITV, and I could definately live without it - especially considering most their junk is on TV3 anyway (including Coronation Street, to keep the mother happy ^_^).

However if channel 4 ever became FTA, I'd get a dish and an FTA box ASAP! Analogue Chorus cable in Limerick is getting worse by the minute - on some days RTÉ1 and Eurosport (both on VHF Band I AFAIK) aren't even watchable on the TVs upstairs in my house... -_-

Of course it would be great for Irish viewers to have ITV free to air, however I think the main reason ITV is talking about it is to try and get a better deal out of Sky and ITV's main interest from what I can make out is a good deal on regionalisation not so much encryption.

ITV have argued that they should get a regionalisation deal more in line with the prices charged to BBC. But BBC only got this deal because, imo, Sky know that BBC don't really need regionalisation to the same extent that ITV does. BBC don't make money from advertising whereas it is very important for ITV to have people watching the appropriate regional ads. Sky, of course, know this so expect more money out of ITV.

ITV are pretending that they are willing to go FTA. If I recall correctly, their bluff has already been called by Sky and ITV haven't gone FTA. ITV are hoping that the UK regulator will help them so they can get a better deal out of Sky.

You never know. Maybe ITV will go FTA but I think Sky know that it will hurt ITV more than themselves.

Thats definitely a plausible view of the situation

Have a look at the stickie on this forum for 'how to tune in extra BBC channels'

I added channels that way and this morning UTV was available when you went in through the 'other channels' way but no sign of ITV 1/2 etc

I clicked on it by accident instead of the Cbeebies channel at 730am and was very suprised to see GMTV on!!!! :D

Without sounding stupid I dont know!!!

I was just searching on this thread for the frequencies to tell someone else I know to give it a try but I programmed these in months ago and the BBC link in the sticky seems to have gone.

Not sure how you can find what frequency its on through system setup but if I find it will post it up.

    next question

please press SELECT and tell us what ITV regional channel you are watching

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,179 ✭✭✭samo

    Its UTV

ITV etc are still coming up blank as nomal.

One of the other posts in the FAQ's gave this frequency 10.832/H 22.0 and 5/6 but tried that as well and not listing UTV for that frequency.

Sorry to not be able to give much more info...but definitly still working anyway.

I had tuned in Cbeebies months ago and at the time must have tuned in UTV with whatever frequency I also had for it...in other channels UTV was stored underneath Cbeebies and hence today when I selected it in error - there was a picture on it.

Will post up a screenshot of the UTV info bar in a second.

Here's a pic from a little while ago.

    Cbeebies is on transponder 10773 h 22 5/6

There is no ITV channel on this frequency.

I see you have UTV from the screenshot but I'm stuck trying to figure how
