Brother Print-heads / Machine Error 41

Some purchasers of Brother printers might be interested to know that, due to the seemingly universal problems with dodgy print-heads, the initial 12 month guarantee has been extended to three years. After my MFC590 decided to die, (Machine Error 41 – Please Contact Brother) I was quoted €200+delivery+VAT, even though the machine was only 14 months old. It was only after I bought another printer from the same seller (Viking Direct), that I was “accidentally” told by one of their people that the guarantee had been extended. The extension apparently only applies to purchasers who report the problem to the original seller e.g. Viking. One of the most annoying aspects of the situation is that Viking obviously knew that there were problems with the Brother devices. They also knew the names and addresses of all of the customers who bought them. It wouldn’t have been a big deal for them to notify these customers, thereby preventing idiots like me from buying a new gizmo. For an outfit used to sending out a shed-load of catalogues every week, the additional postage cost would have been barely noticeable.

So now, I have two multi-function devices (one with print-heads replaced FOC) and I’ve paid Viking for both of them. I can promise that Viking will not be getting any more of my hard-earned dosh!
