If you had a stand ticket you weren't allowed onto the pitch.

Now I know this is because of the girl who was crushed at the Smashing Pumpkins a few years back when all the seated people crammed into the standing area but in my view it was over-rigid interpretation of the rules

1 - the area in front of the stage was segregated anyway
2 - the pitch was half empty and the gig overall was far from sold-out

letting people from the stands onto the pitch would have had no safety implications at all. the stewards were doing their job but somebody in charge should have had a look at the numbers and decided to drop the rule - it would have saved a lot of arguments and grief for the stewards

also - if you bought a beer (after queueing for 20 minutes or so) you were only allowed to drink it on the pitch, not in the stands - so if you had a stand ticket you had to drink on the small patch of tarmac right down the back.

    right, moan over.

Why not just buy pitch ticket in the first place?

My thoughts exactly, you paid for a stand ticket, stay in the stand

    .

It's not as simple as saying the pitch was half empty. I think it has to do with fire regulations i.e they can only let so many on the pitch as everyone would need to be evacuated within x minutes in the event of fire.

yeah if they maintain it so that only those with standing tickets are standing then they roughly know the number of people on the pitch. if you add in all the people with seated tickets there's know way of knowing how large a crowd you have which screws up the logistics of fire safety. crowd control, exit, entry etc.
besides i heard standing had finally sold out by the time of the gig.
if you buy a seated ticket that's what you deserve, its cheaper for a reason.

Safety rules are there for a reason. If you wanted a pitch ticket you should have just bought one for gods sake

I had a seating ticket and walked straight onto the pitch, no hassle.
