I have been living in Kilkenny for three months. I was looking to learn Thai Boxing and/or BJJ. Are there any gyms for these MAs in Kilkenny?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No BJJ in kilkenny, but if you drop across the bridge to Waterford, we have two places here you can train in both muay thai or bjj.

Thanks dlofnep. Do you have any info on those BJJ and Muay Thai gyms? Schedule, rates, contact number or e-mail? Does there happen to be a Muay Thai gym in Kilkenny btw?

dunno about mauy thai in Kilkenny.

You can drop by either our tramore club (details are on hapkido.ie). We cover BJJ there.. and hapkido if that's your thing.

Or you can drop by Billy O'Sullivans kick boxing gym. Submission wrestling and muay thai is covered. It's a pretty nice gym. Address is: Billy O'Sullivans Gym, Jute Factory, Tycor, Waterford.

I'll look into the times for you, but the guys are usually at Billy's every night between 6 - 9. tramore is tuesday nights (sometimes), firday nights, and saturday mornings.

Thanks dlofnep. I will definately check into those clubs. The gracice Jiu-Jitsu sounds great. Since Waterford is about an hour or so away from Kilkenny I will most likely be driving. Is parking spaces easy to find near those clubs? Interested to know so if need be I can give myself extra time to get to Waterford find a parking space and not be late for class.

Thanks Paddy. Was that guy on British Bruisers last night for Sean's? They had a guy from Ireland on last night and they listed his gym as Dillon's Thai. Unfortunately he lost. :(

British Bruisers is a British Kickboxing show on Men n Motors tv. I forgot the guys name but he was from Ireland and his gym was listed as Dillon's Thai.

dlofnep. Are you sure Billy O'Sullivan's gym teaches Muay Thai? Michelle Burchfield said they taught Full Contact Kickboxing not Muay Thai. :( Thanks anyway dlofnep.

John, it is a kick boxing gym but there is a muay thai guy there. The differences are slight anyways and the facilities are good. Check it out for yourself.

    hey,

wouldn't this be like saying that wrestling and bjj are the same thing. or judo and wrestling or judo and jitz?

It was by only trying a bit out of all 3 did i realise the differences. I said this to john k myself, at first it all seems basically the same except for little bits, but as you do more, you realise how important the little differences are.

probably from a wtf tkd's person's perspective bjj and judo are the same. and probably from a bjj person's perspective muay thai and "kickboxing" are the "same".

sure, some ppl think tkd and karate are synonymous.

Nobody said they were the same. I said they were similar. _Yes_ they are similar. What's the problem? It's just like judo and bjj are similar.

Thanks Dlopfnep. Ms. Burchfield only gave me the schedule for the FCK and submission wrestling. No mention of Muay Thai. There is a FCK gym near me [Kilkenny Top Pro] but I prefer Muay Thai since they don't have the restrictions FCK have and FCk is kind of a joke back in the US.

i'm just saying similarity depends on your perspective. yes for someone from a horse riding background they are "similar" and for MMA people they are similar but my point is, the differences are more important. alah Roman Catholism and Protestantism.

Anyone care to go on record about Sword Muay Thai. I sense Paddyc wants to say something but isn't. It does exist yeah?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭JohnMc1

I'm not knocking FCK or anything. I just prefer Muay Thai and would like to continue training with it and I used to train in BJJ with Renzo Gracie so I would also like to continue training in BJJ as well. I wasn't trying to slam other styles and I don't intend to. I just have my preferences that's all.

you trained with renzo? that's class. do explain.

You can train BJJ with us if you like John.

Thanks dlofnep. No I just have to find an actual Thaiboxing gym without having to drive 2+ hours to either Cork or Dublin.

Polar bear. I trained with Renoz in his NY academy off and on [Mostly off sorry to say. $250 a month unlimited. No I hear its $350] for 2+ years. Great place to train BJJ. Great grapplers came out of there.
