Well im really just curious here. How did all these mods become mods? Do you have to pledge allegiance to a secret underground cult that eats bunnies once a month :p . Perhaps your dad is high up in the government? :D . Just wondering really :) ?

Then shortly after the other user leaves, also as a mod.

I just said "Hey make me mod" and they did.

I have no Idea what to do, and I hate everyone on boards.

I ban people I don't like and I never read reports or actually do my job unless I see someone I don't like and then I would ban them. Not because they did anything wrong.

I'm secretly taking them down from the inside, and I love the powertrip.

    See ya'll at boardstock :D

well how i ended up being mod was a number of people (myself included) asked for a film production forum, there was disscusion with the almighty admins (insert: grovelling) until it was decided there was enough interest for a board called film production. When it was set up the admins asked the people who asked for the board to choose a moderator, me and monkeyfudge. Because of our interest and knowledge of the subject and that we were friendly, were chosen to be the mods.

    and the rest is geography.

Actually, it normally weighs against you if you were the person who asked for the forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,363 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

From what I've seen you basically get chosen for the job if the powers that be think you'd be good at it for a particular forum based on your previously demonstrated knowledge of a subject and worthwhile post to spam ratio. Obviously being a mod of one of the other forums would give you the edge if you were one of a number of contenders for the role.

Gah. Sleepy. You're not meant to give a full and sensible answer to the "How do you become a mod" question until about the third page at least.

That's pretty much it really. The admins decide to make you a mod, and then you are one. I was mod of the Programming forum for about a couple of weeks before they bothered to even tell me. I was working with them at the time, so it's not like they didn't know I was away on holidays.

Sometimes they give the jobs to people they know, sometimes they listen to popular opinion. Sometimes someone they know says "Make X mod of Y" and they figure that person's been paying more attention to the forum in question and do so. Sometimes they just make he person who asked for the forum mod - if they seem like mod material - but more often they don't. Sometimes a current mod of the forum suggests a new mod as assistance or as a replacement if they're retiring.

In all though, like everything else in boards the admins do whatever seems like a good idea at the time.

So are all the mod positions taken? or do they need more. There should be a thread for poeple to apply to to become mods of a certain forum. They could state why they wanted it and how they deserved it :). Make me mod of the extreme sports forum :D .

    Christ all ****ing mighty.

You are generally selected to be a moderator if you clearly have some relative knowledge and interest in regards to what topics the forum encompasses, and have preferably been here for a while so that one can determine wether you're worth your weight in piss when it comes down to actually 'moderating' ie. not crying like a little bitch, or 'power tripping', on the mere sniff of you getting a remotely offensive / critical post from someone else.

One has to be of fair judgement when it comes to moderating, because it can certainly be hard sometimes to differenciate between the gold and the ****, depending on the posters in question, their method of posting, and how much they like you or those they are refering to in their posts.

If you can't handle yourself well on Boards, you should not, and most likely will not be a moderator, and coming here spouting out requests like 'OEMG HOEW DOE I BECOEM A MOEDERATOR?' is most certainly NOT going to get you very damn far.

Lots of people have this ****ing notion that being a moderator makes you different or 'better' than other 'regular' posters, when all it really does is put some work and committment on your back. Not that it's a bad thing, mind, but some people are just so damn happy to get a mod title that they neglect their damn duty.

You don't 'apply' to be a moderator, you simply show that you have an interest in Boards and it's forums, ensure that you don't continuously act like a little twerp and annoy fellow posters, moderators and the administration, be fair, refrain from demanding forums simply because you want a title rather than it possibly being good idea, stop posting up **** in regards to 'How is a mod selected' or how 'I want to be moderator' and just be yourself.

You could also take the easier route, and simply throw ecksor a few PM's in mIRC and see how far you get.
So are all the mod positions taken?

This isn't a job description, it's a public site where new forums are created fairly often. Unless created forums require moderators, or current moderators are in a possition where they cannot mod their forums anymore and need extra help, then there is no damn need for anyone to 'apply'. If previously mentioned situations occur, and an obvious need for a moderator arises, then having some know-how in regards to said forum topic and showing some interest will do you better than saying "I CAN MOD IT FOR YOU!"
So one way is to petition for a new forum?

So I take it we better watch out for your new forum in the event that it might be because you feel like it'll be a worthwhile addition to the cause of Boards.ie, and not you wanting to have that little 'Mod' title under your nick?

Requesting Forums for the sole idea that it'll make you a moderator is cheap, lame and downright shameful.
    higher power

    There is no 'Higher Power'.
Other than the ability to chop and change threads, you do not gain anything, especially not 'Higher Power'. It only means that you have to pay a bit more attention when you're on Boards, and do some actual work.

The difficulty of being a moderator is determined by the type & popularity of the mentioned forum. I am bloody greatful that the majority of our current moderators (Of 'Official Boards' at least) are a decent bunch of people. If we handed out moderatorship to random people, I damn well guarantee that half of you bleating buggers wouldn't even be here because of the results that would entail.
Share your story mods of how u became servants of boards.

In regards to the initial topic:

The two forums I moderate at the moment (One Private and one public) were created on request. I used to moderate Game Editing, Creative Writing and Boards Awards on top of that, but after I went AWOL for three years it was duly removed, because of the fact that 'YES, EVEN MODERATORS ARE WATCHED BY THE ADMINISTRATION'. I never cried about it, and I never will. I am saddened that I lost the moderatorship on the sole basis that they were topics that I really enjoyed working on & helping with (The current moderators can vouch for that) but they're in equally good hands so I'm not pushed.

I will now refrain from continuously bitching at this pathetic show, and will join in the chanting of the two fabled words 'AMP' & 'TEST'.

    Good morning to you all.

That is easily the worst idea. Ever.

There are no set number of moderator positions. Mods are appointed as they are required. In days gone by, a moderator was pretty much appointed as soon as a board was created, otherwise the Admins would be left moderating it. With the advent of Cmods, who can moderate any forum in their category, there's no such rush, and quite often no mods are appointed for quite some time, or at all, unless the forum becomes very busy.
Recent trend has been to use existing mods as mods of new boards. Perhaps this is because the admins think there are enough mods already, or perhaps they just haven't been around enough - they don't know any of the "new" regulars.

That isn't really true though. For example I know very little about Islam (I am not a muslim). Moderating isn't all free women and beer. On certain boards it can be quite demanding/soul destroying. After Hours has claimed the sanity of some.

It just requires having to read through some posts, whack muppets and general cleaning.

If you (not you RopeDrink) think it is some kind of power trip your sorely mistaken (Thats the admins).
and have preferably been here for a while so that one can determine wether you're worth your weight in piss when it comes down to actually 'moderating' ie. not crying like a little bitch, or 'power tripping', on the mere sniff of you getting a remotely offensive / critical post from someone else.

Which is more likely to get you selected. Not taking something personal to your board as well. For example there are a few people who I don't like/have on ignore but if they posted on a board I moderate I have to leave my personal feelings at the door.
You could also take the easier route, and simply throw ecksor a few PM's in mIRC and see how far you get.

    Your evil. :)

I agree with most of what your saying though.

With more popular forums it's quite easy to moderate with little knowledge of the topic in hand - you can leave being knowledgable on the topic to the regulars and just deal with disputes, spam, flame-wars etc.
With really popular forums you can happily ignore it and just deal with reported posts.
With smaller forums it's good to be a bit more proactive in trying to bring matters of interest to the attention of the users, putting up some stickied threads of background info on the topic, etc. though nothing can make you run out of ideas of things to post about than feeling you really should. Even here though, that's a matter of going above-and-beyond the requirements, the requirement is that you moderate not that you know anything.

Just slightly increasing the amount of attention I paid to Personal Issues as an SMod during ruthies time offline put me into a foul mood for a while, and I still wasn't paying as much attention as the PI mods. There's a good reason why the PI Mods have their own forum to talk about things amongst themselves, the moment you actually say you'll look at PI threads, rather than merely choosing to in a few idle minutes, it starts making your blood pressure rise.

Thankfully I never had those stresses when I was one of them thar 'Official Mod' types - They were relatively quiet Boards (and still are) and as for bringing matters of interest to the forum, well, that should be on the mind of any would be / current moderator, regardless of their knowledge in regards to the forum topic.

This is why I'm getting aggravated with all these posts...
Why is it always natural for people to assume that being a moderator means being that 'little bit furthur up the ladder thanks to gaining a title' rather than a tool that is to be used in order to better the site itself (via actually doing something with said 'title').

Being a moderator requires some brainpower, boards experience and dealing with a little responsibility (In some cases, quite a bit of responsibility). Bitching about how you would like to BE a moderator, with no consideration as to what being a moderator actually means, is brainless trollop on said posters behalf.

Being a moderator is not a joke and, as Talliesin mentioned, in some cases it can be a bit stressful. Becoming a moderator does not mean you are cool, it does not gain you 'overall' kudos (Although it can stand for you in some limited aspects), it does not increase the size of your wang, and it does not offer you any 'hadoken special fighting powers'.

It simply means that you are a good contributor to the site, that you are willing and able to aid the site by wrestling a little work off the admins (and other mods) backs by lending a hand (ie. doing some work), that you are a fair judge and jury when it comes to the nitty gritty, that you are aware of where threads and spam are to be moved when they are bleated in the wrong areas of Boards, capable of submitting new ideas and suggestions in regards to your own forums topics and, of course, the rest of the site if you can, stepping in to help out fellow mods in the event that one of them becomes incapable of minding their forums for whatever reason... Gah, the list goes on.

If you want to become a moderator then I first suggest you drop your desire to quickly become one, start making worthwhile contributions to the site to prove your interest, give your feedback and suggestions to forums you feel might benefit from it, be yourself, play nice, be fair, and stop pestering everyone with topics like this.

    I was only kidding.

I know that Mr.NiceGuy, but it's gone far beyond funny at this stage, what with the amount of times this particular topic gets posted up here. I'll make this perfectly clear. Everything I have said is my simple attempt and drilling a very very simple fact into the brains of those who feel compelled to ask about becoming a moderator and that is that if a moderator is needed, then one will be found.

Credit to the original thread starter, he simply asked 'How we became moderators' but look at how quickly it degraded into 'How do 'we' become moderators' which isn't the mentality one looks for when you need someone capable of holding their own ground on the biggest (and best) open forum in the country.

Im not slating anyone here, just stating the obvious.
