I've seen the whole first season but while watching ep 16 last night on rte i realised something.
When Charlie and Hurley ar burying Ethan, there is a shot of ethan's hand. If you look at his chest, ITS MOVING. ETHAN ISN'T DEAD.
Anyone else see this or ike to pass comment?

Also been discussed here many times (.. but what hasn't?!... :D)

My opinion: watching it again last night.. there seems to be a bit of a wind (noticed as Hurley shirt moves in the wind). Ethan is wrapped in a sheet - wind + sheet = moving sheet! :D Simple as that!

Also... the man was shot 4 times in the chest! Not even Tupac / Biggie and the North Staines massive could survive Charlie's 4 shots at point-blank range!

    Anyone else got any views?

I knew he moved!! I was watching it with my girlfriend and both of us noticed it. He's hand twitched a tiny bit, (or he's a bad actor!)

Did anyone notice when claire (I think...) was in front of the fountain near the start, a woman filled her bottle with water in the background and then walk away to the right of the screen. Was that the French woman?? Looked a hell of alot like her!!

I think he is dead...it would be a bit too much to have him come back from the dead.

Yeah.. cos all the great actors know how to keep their hand's extremely still!

Honestly.. i'd imagine it's quite difficult to remain extremely still while wrapped in a sheet and in sweltering heat. And besides.. maybe the wind moved his hand somewhat.

I think it's being over analytical to assume he was still alive when buried.

It also took a good 6 - 7 shots to the head to knock him out, and they didn't even knock him out at that! He's one tough SOB! He's a freak! I wouldn't be surprised...

While we're talking about Ethan, I thought his death was a bad plot point, to be honest. I thought he was a great bad guy, tall, physically strong, imposing, and genuinely scary. I really wish that he hadn't been killed off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

Ye part of me didn't want him to die, becasue as you said he was one freaky and scary bad guy. But I like how he died, the way it was done, and i doubt he would have given any info up.

Agreed! And also another certain character's demise that i felt very strongly about.

Ye all know how i'm talking about... especially TmB!

Yeah, I was expecting to see blood everywhere after Jack hit him that many times that hard, full force, right in the face (his face was mostly covered until the end of the fight). That I didn't see any blood to speak of made me think:

    1) It's a TV show and they don't do blood too much (though other injuries on Lost have been much better than average for realism)
    2) It was raining, thus washing the blood away
    3) Ethan's super-human in some fashion

I think 4 to the chest is a bit much to recover from though. :)

If he was wrapped in a sheet, why not use a dummy?

I was expecting to see his hand move, so I watched but didn't see anything.

When he got shot though, just before you see who did it, I assumed it was his own people. I thought they shot him so he wouldn't be of any help to them when interrogating him.

Lifelike dummies are expensive, and hard to match for skin tone, size etc. I haven't seen many dummy-like corpses on Lost, so I don't think they have stock dummies like ER. Cheaper and easier just to stick the actor in. :D

To be honest, I'd say it was just the actor twitching, which is understandable given the circumstances. In Buffy, they were known to digitally remove the "corpse" blinking. Besides, Jack would be a pretty crap doctor if he couldn't diagnose a case of death. :D

I think that they had a dummy made for Boromir in LOTR that was just a bit too realistic and the crew thought it was just Sean Bean made up.

I was watching his hand, half-expecting it to move but it didn't. It would be stupid if he did move.

This is my first time on this particular forum (even though I LOVE Lost and have watched every ep as it has aired in IRL) so don't kill me for saying this theorey and if it were said already.

    Is Ethan Dannielle's son Alex?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭Fridge

    Is Ethan Dannielle's son Alex?

I wondered that but then her son had a different name. Can't remember what it was though. But I bet he was taken my Ethan's people.

Also, I'd say he's too old. I'm guessing she had the baby while she was on the island, which may not be true. But it makes more sense. Those people seem to be after kids and if she did have him while she was on the island, he'd only be 16 now at the most.

Is Ethan and the French woman connected at all?.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 950 ✭✭✭EamonnKeane

I used to think that Ethan was the black woman's husband (the woman who believed her husband had survived) but this is unlikely. Also, did anyone notice that "Ethan Rom" is an anagram of "The Roman"?

Highly unlikely, she's easily 20 years older than him.

What significance would "The Roman" have?
A more significant anagram is "Other Man".

How would that work? He was pretending to be one of them since they landed or for a good while at least. Do you not think if he was yer one's husband she'd recognise him? And why wouldn't his name be on the manifest if he was on the plane?

Why did Charlie shoot him though?
Is he just miffed at the hanging thing or does he know stuff, like Locke, he doesn't want revealed to the rest of the cast aways?

How did heavily pregnant girl get away from super human baddy Ethan, sure his face was scrope, but she wasn't gonna beat him like Jack had to ,or outrun anyone!

Why do the Others want kids anyway? To make more super human baddies?
    Can they not reproduce themselves?

Any credence to the theory that the island is buzzing with Nano Tech, improving all inhabitants of the island a little at a time. Some people hear the Voices in the jungle, maybe the modifications don't "take" in some, driving them nuts. The sickness the French woman refers to possibly?

Didn't the father, of the girl Charlie was seeing, own a photocopier selling business and not a paper company?

I remember him demonstrating the photocopier, not demonstrating paper.

I'd need to see the Ep. again but i'm fairly certain that was the case.

That is right, but the first time Charlie went round to her house she said that he was currently away and she thought he was "buying a paper company in Slough or something."

But it was the photocopier company that she got Charlie the job with.

I saw that episode again there the other night and it did look like he was breathing. And what i thought was weird was the camera angle they used.
What i mean is why did they used this view. The camera is on the ground beside ethan
pointed toward charlie and hurely the perfect view to see anything strange about the body why else would they do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭Fridge

I didn't see it move at all.
Maybe it was to cause suspense, because they knew we'd check to see if he was still moving.

Or if he really did move, then they wanted us to see. Maybe he's not dead and he'll dig himself out of his grave or something? But I don't think so.

My girlfriend who doesnt even watch lost(she has no interest in it) Happened to see that episode, I noticed his hands move/chest rise, I just made a mental note, But she turned and said ''did his hands and chest just move''. So i dont know, Maybe just unfortunate acting accident but lost being lost you never know.

I remeber during Junior Cert Media Studies we were told that every shot in a film is there for a reason. Why would they use that shot for no reason.
Maybe they focused on Ethan's hand to drag our eyes away from his body?

what i think is important in the whole ethan rom/claire saga is what they HANEN'T told us i.e. how claire got away from him. they haven't really touched upon this, choosing to distract us with using her as bait to kill ethan which was big and given great importance.
    I've got a theory that
claire got "the sickness" from ethan and/or the others on the island (if there are any) and that she's really "one of them" now and is a mole. also, Locke kinda of senses this so that's why he took an interest in her and wanted to make the crib for her so that she'll think that he's on her side
this is pure speculation however, but I really hope I'm right in some respect! i can't keep up with all the conspiracies!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭Fridge

That kinda depends on what the sickness is though.
Or do you know what exactly it is?

His index finger and chest are absoutley moving in that clip...but as i said earlier could be unfortunate acting.

If you look at the background you'll see from the movement that the camera was hand held - could this be contributing to the movement?

have not got this far yet, but Ethan Rom is clearly an anagram of Other Man (if obvious and already covered, please let me know.) Also on the basis of names... i still favour the purgatory theory... the guy in charge of them is Dr. Jack Sheppard (shepherd leading the flock??)

Yeah the anagram was mentioned as was another anagram but i can't recall right now?

"The Roman", I forget who suggested them.

Re: Purgatory... I was under the impression that idea had already been discarded by the writers. I think of it more like... Silent Hill. It's a place with the abilities to confront people with their personal demons and deepest fears... but that doesn't make it Purgatory, and it doesn't make it divine. The place has special qualities, no dispute, but it's looking ever more likely that the epiphanys it's offering everybody are either window-dressing or just a happy accident. Whatever the place's ultimate purpose for everybody, just because it's helped some of them doesn't mean it's benevolent...

    lol, there are many anagrams that can be made from "ethan rom". who's to say which, if any, is intentional. for example;

    ethan rom
    more than
    ear month
moth near (mystery of "the monster" SOLVED! \0/)
    not harem
    horn meat
    team horn
    then roam
    hat or men
    note harm
    etc etc etc

ok some (most) of them are a bit ridiculous, but you never know, this IS lost after all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

I had expected to know this before asking it as I had hoped the dvd would be nearly here by now,but it has bene further delayed so I cant check it.

I might be imagining things, but when hurley asks Ethan his name,I thought Hurley said "Rohm?",to which Ethan nods, the anagram doesnt work then. Im probably wrong.
