    Hi,

Is NTL gone down in Galway? I have it and my mate has digital and neither of us have a picture and he has lost his cable broadband too, obviously! May have to read a book now to pass the time.... :)

Anyone have any news as to why and any news as to when they will get around to fixing it?

    Cheers.

I'd hazard a guess that NTL might do :) Seriously, give the service number a ring, and usually when you choose the "report a fault" option there's a recorded message telling you about all known outages at that time and what their status is. At least in Dublin they do that.

was down due to a power blackout over most of the city. When the power came back ntl didn't. Strange thing as well, the scart loopthrough doesn't work if the stb has no cable signal? All back now though!

I am looking at getting NTL digital. I am based in Claregalway. I am wondeing how long you have it and how has the quality of picture been and how reliable is the picture. What size TV are you wat5ching it on as I am planning to buy 37" LCD/plasma and am wondering if the picture quality will be ok. Is there any way I can get a full list of all channels provided on both the basic and upgrade packs.

If you are in Claregalyway, you'll be getting NTL MMDS.

Picture quality is OK on a 32" CRT. Some fine detail missing, I can't really say how good it is compared to $ky, but I heard it is not as good.

You get 20 channels in the basic package, of which 4 (the Irish ones) are freely available on terrestrial TV & a further 4 are available free on satellite.

Of the remaining 12, some are only available a few hour per day, but at least you get full ITV,C4,E4,$ky one.

Problems are the poor hardware, the silver Pace box has no chanel display, so you have to put the TV on to set the VCR. Also, you can only watch one channel at a time, if you want to watch one & record another, you need a second box (€10 extra).

If you want to feed the signal to another TV in another room, you need a modulator or a VCR RF out.

Lately, the picture has been "freezing" for about a second, happens randomly.
Not sure if it's the box going bad or trees affecting the signal. Will find out in winter.

Is that digital or analouge? I thought the digital service was the same on mmds than on the city center cable service? I could be wrong. If so I have found picture quality Ok, Not as good as sky on some channels but all the main channels are fine. Setanta sports now seems to have a lot of compression and is a bit ropey.

Analogue MMDS is gone (at least in NTL covered areas).
Digital MMDS is very similar to the cable system (as you mentioned), I have seen the same boxes in the city as in country homes.

Of course, the firmware might be different, but I think they are the same, as it saves money for NTL to have the same HW/FW everywhere.

Yes, there is too much compression on some channels, noticably the ones way up in the high numbers/ones with specialised output.

Sometimes, even on the main channels, if the program contains fast moving objects, the picture becomes "pixelated" around the moving object.

It's just about acceptable for delivery of content available in the current technical standards, butwill not be able to manage HDTV, unless they get more bandwidth or carry less channels, or perhaps get better encoders.
