Ok so i finished the race in 1hr 20mins exactly with my client.

It was a stunning day and a great opportunity to meet with fellow runners and organise regular meeting for running sessions as those long runs can be a drain without company.

Doing the half marathon in september so there is a good goal for all those who want to set a good target

    How did others do?

p.s would have liked to know how much faster i could have run if it was at my own pace. Though there are lots of chances in the future for that

Surprised myself with 1h07h30s. Pretty much fell over the line. Was wrecked after. My thighs paying for it today.
I'll be sticking to 10k in the future.

Quite warm yesterday - the shaded stretches and the light breeze were very welcome.

First time ever doing 10m - did it in 1hr 41mins - longest I've run before is 10k. I know it's not a particularly quick time but I'm training for my 1st marathon and think I'm pretty much on target! Will def do 1/2 marathon in Sept. Was anyone else psychologically wrecked by fact that the water was not at 1/2 way like expected (or did I get that wrong?!?) I thought I was doing fantastic when we got to the water so quickly....only to be brought back to earth with bump when I saw the 4mile marker!!! Still - a great day and such a sense of achievement when I finished!

Completed the race myself and very happy overall. Longest distance i have ever run also. I had plenty left over in the tank at the end so id say i could have pushed myself a bit more. I will be doing the half marathon in September.
I have not fully committed to doing th full marathon in October.

Do people feel that by running the 10 miler that they are on track to run marathon? My training is going well but i dont know if its enough for the marathon.

I cant say i was bothered by the re-loaction of the water station but i can fully understand where you are coming from.

Overall though i thought the day went brilliant!

I take it you mean the Dublin marathon.
It depends on what your training schedule has been like to date.
Only ~9 weeks to go, 2 or 3 of which should be taper. It can be done but you need to up the mileage on the long runs.
You would really need to get in at least 2 long runs in the next 5-6 weeks. By long runs I mean in the 16-20 mile range.
    They are vital.

my first 10 miler...did it in 1 hr 23m ins50 secs....but nothing left in the tank.

knees and back were pretty stiff/sore the next day..still a bit now!

hoping to do the marathon in october too...but will need to up mileage considerably...agree on needing to run 16-20 at least twice b4 marathon (prob even b4 the half marathon).

thought there would be more water on the course...

True if anyone is going to do the marathon you must do the long session once per week - 16-20miles. Otherwise you will be wiped out for the week after the race!!

See all those for the half marathon

I wouldn't recommend you do a 16-20 mile run any more than once or twice before your marathon.

We don't know what mileage bmurphy8177 is doing but I'm afraid I have to disagree with the above.

daveirl: you are basing this on your own experience of running 12m a day. That's a lot of miles, nearly 1/2 marathon a day, you don't need more than 2 long runs with that kind of prep behind you. bmurphy8177 on the other hand does not have that luxury. With a couple of conditions he should get in as many long runs as he can.

Condition 1. He should have a good base behind him. A lot of marathon programs start from a base of 35-40 miles a week.
Condition 2. He doesn't injure himself, if it is getting to be too much, stop take a few days off.
Condition 3. Don't go nuts on the 10% rule i.e. don't raise your weekly mileage by a lot more than 10%. He could add the 10% on his long runs and leave the rest as is.
Condition 4. Take a proper taper, for me that's a last long run 4 weeks before the marathon. Steady decrease in distance up to the the last few days. That includes shorter runs a proportion of which are at a higher than normal intensity.

Realistically, from a base of a 10 mile long run I would be surprised/impressed if he could manage 3 or more long runs over 16 miles in the remaining time. Provided that he has a good base behind him and he follows the above, getting in as many long runs as he can will stand to him.

Hi...I need a kick in the a**! For the week before 10miler I only did one 20min run as ended up not being well for week...since doing 10miles I have not been able to motivate myself back out for a run or even to gym.... Physically feeling fine and the stiffness from race was gone by Monday evening....but only exercise has been walking dogs every day! I'm really hoping to get myself back out on the road this w/e! Pleeeeeeese help as I really do want to at least do 1/2 marathon and preferably full one but am worried at fact that it's now nearly two weeks gone with only one decent run done!

wokie...see if there is anybody nearby you that you could run with. it always helps when there is somebody who drags you out the days that you dont really want to go ..or forces you to do that extra mile....and vice versa

Totally agree with dermcu - need just one long run per week with taper.

The client i have has increased by 10% or less over the past 5 months - started with a 45min run and over the past month our long run was about 2hrs 10mins for 22-24km. Nothing crazy just a long run keeping HR in the lower ranges (this came in very handy in the 10mile race as most went out wayyyyy to fast so we kept HR at about 150-155bpm as we knew a higher HR would produce xs lactic acid FOR HIM).

Best of luck and company certainly helps lots

Thanks lads/lassies? :) Think you're right I do need company! I don't know that many people in my area who do run so going to check out local athletics club...

I finished the race in 1 hour 20 minutes and 1 Second! Damn you Transform!
I did it last year in 1 hour 16 minute 50 Seconds IIRC.

Didn't do enough training for it, was a stone lighter last year too :-)
