Does it mean that you have to repeat the year doing only that subject? and if so, what are the fees and stuff?

Generally it means you have to repeat just that module but I think it changes from course to course. As for fees, if you repeat within the university, you'll have to pay fees for that year iirc.

Your best bet is to go talk to your course coordinator or someone relatively high up in whatever department you're in.

And the exam might not have gone as badly as you think. :)

    You'll have 4 choices...

    1. Do the entire year again at a cost of a few grand
    2. Do the year again doing JUST the subject you failed to the tune of a couple of hundred and do the exam with the others at the end of the year
    3. Take the year out and come back at the end of the year to do the exam to the tune of whatever exams cost
    4. Beg to the head of your school to let you carry the subject or compensate (this is what I did and got in on the condition that I chose to go into DME from my common year because in DME you don't do that subject anymore)

Needless to say option number 5 would be "don't fail"

For option two is that like doing it with first years when they are doing theirs? And still carrying on with the rest of your course? Cuz I'm so worried I'll fail my repeat, but its only one out of twelve like. Is that not a bit much?

You also have the option of repeat that subject(s) internally or externally.

I you choose to repeat interally you pay a couple of hundred to be able to attend lectures for that subject and then also your exams.

If you choose to repeat externally you do option3.Pay a couple of hundred less then internally and do just the exam but you are not registered to be able to attend lectures

For any repeats, you have to pay you €700 registration too.

    I'm going to go for
    4. Beg to the head of your school to let you carry the subject or compensate

Was it Jim Dowling you had to beg too? I've a pretty strong argument as to why I should be allowed go to next year even with a failed repeat. I'll write up my begging email tomorrow! I'll take 6 years for my degree if I have to resit the exam again :(

Yep, he's actually quite approachable and reasonable which may not be obvious after first year (he lightens up when you get into second year) but I also had to talk to Noel O'Connor (head of DME).

Yep, we had a load of people who failed last year in our maths class this year.

That's pretty much exactly what I posted originally...

I've actually had dinner with him a few times! I was living in France with his son for a while but I'm not sure what to expect when i ask him to let me into 4th year without passing all my exams!

Ah, fantastic. So I can go into second year and repeat this exam for the third time if I have to. And do I need to beg people? Or is it just one of those offers they give you?

jess if the subject isnt that relative to your course they'll compensate you more than usual. usually the max they can compensate you on a 5 credit module is 15%, but i'm doin CA and i got 22% in accounting (a whopper fail!!) and they still compensated me!! could just be really jammie though! :D

Haha. Well I got 13% in the first one. And I am meant to be continuing with the computer part of the course and I failed programming. :/ Ah, with any luck I'll do alright today. On my way in now to study. Thanks Vin.

you'd almost certainly be doing JUST that subject for the year which would be a bit of a pain...

Depending on the subject you may be able to carry it but that'd mean doing your whole second year with an extra subject...

Can i just ask if these are actual choices and not "recommendations" that the powers-that-be make for ya?

Ive 5 reps. 2year long and 3 second semester, and am ****tin that if i fail the year longs, theyll make me do the whole shebang (lectures, projects and exam) again next year.

And does anyone know if ya would have to do projects and sh1t (i got 65 and 66) again next year if ya fail the exam? Both year-long modules are quite releavant to the course.

    Thanks for any advice.

If you repeat internally you have to do 'the whole shebang' again.

Externally, just pay exams fees and turn up for the exam at the end of next year.

and thats 100% your decision, right?
Even if ya fail 3 or 4 exams?

    More than likely.
Depending on the course you are doing (ie. How large the class sizes are) you can register as an external candidate and nip in (on the QT obviously)for a few lectures on stuff that you need help with but I'd try clear it up a little with the lecturer beforehand. You might hit trouble if your course involves labs/small groups though.

If you repeat internally you have to do the continous assesment work again too but externally the exams I had were solely based on the exam. I asked if I could carry over project work and the lecturer wasn't having any of it.

cool, yeah im doin a business subject so the classes are huge and no labs or any of that.

Thats grand, i just dont wanna have to do the bastids again, or go to lectures for that matter. Im just tryin to pass 2or3 now, then get a job and just repeat the exams next year.

Incidentally, whats the story with the modules for the repeat exams?

Briefly, i failed 5 exams in summer (2 year long and 3 2nd semester), now say i failed all 5 again. I wanna just repeat the exams externally. Would i have to wait till next summer to do them?
Or is there some way to have them in january, and get them outta the way?
    Anyone?

    Almost defintiely next summer.

OK, so when should i start begging? When the results come out or earlier? And who exactly should i beg? :D

Well basically they're the only viable courses of action you'll have if you fail...

yeah i know what ya mean, but does the "man" make ya do one of the choices, like say repeating lectures etc, or can you choose whichever one ya want?

By the way, tuesdays exam was a write-off so ill need to decide pretty quick!
