    Hi,
Any herbal remedies or ancient methods of getting to sleep and staying asleep for at least 8 hours straight? I'm sick of waking up after about 5 hours sleep, I can get to sleep fine, it's just I wake up too soon:(

    Any feedback appreciated:)

Close your eyes, you'll fall asleep eventually.

Lavander on you pillow, hot milk or Horlex before you sleep. Turkey makes you sleep too but I am fishing now!

Lavender works!! Evening primrose oil is another calming agent... don't know if it will keep you asleep though. 14 pints will!!

Have the same problem, I get between 1-4 hours of sleep every 24 hours. Always tired. Try going to your GP. Medication may work for you. Never worked for me though

With me it's just a case of, have stuff to do, can't sleep, I'll wake up at about 9 no matter what time I go to sleep at, I'll get up, check emails etc then I'll end up online for a bit more, go back to bed and wont be able to get back to sleep because I'm waiting for a reply on an important email or whatever or have to keep an eye on a boards topic etc.

I remember the good oul days of being in hospital, anasthetic, injection, one two zzzzzzzz. Knocked out for a few hours, anything like that around? You see the thing is, if I got my 8 hours I'd be able to get up and get dressed etc for the day instead of getting up going online and going back to bed.

So anything that can knock me for 8/9 hours straight!

Would lavendar/primrose be good for getting back to sleep with all these things I have to do that day on my mind etc?

You're thinking too much. When you wake up, don't turn on the computer. Get up, get a cup of hot milk, chill out for 15 minutes without TV or internet and go back to bed. Getting up and going online will only make it worse. For at least an hour before you go to bed, remove yourself from life. Get a good book and read it. Don't watch TV, especially stay away from the net and music.

I tend to have sleep problems too, head down at 11 and asleep by 2 or 3 and then awake again at 7 on a regular basis. I consulted a few places and one method suggested works the best out of everything ive tried... simply empty your head totally, get anything thats bothering you etc out of the way. It also lends to dreamless sleep. Not much else as worked on me, even the Lavender.

Ild like to be able to wake up, I remember when I was setting my alarms for college, i would wake up and turn off both of them and go back to sleep without any memory of doing it, also if i go to sleep at 3-4 ill wake up at 2-3, its disgracefull :( and im always tired so theres no benifit of it

I agree with Seamus, just stop thinking so much...and why do you bother getting up and going back?

Goto bed at night and leave life behind...its what I do to get to sleep, when you wake up then if your 8hrs aren't up just turn over and repeat original plan. If I thought about my life when I goto bed i wouldn't sleep at all, happened me the other week when I broke up with the g/f...too much thinking/worrying was only getting 3/4hrs a night...best job is to not think.

I used to smoke to sleep but this eventually proved fruitless. I have a very messed up sleeping habit due to work - 1/2 hours one night 12 hours the next. Now I read. Get a good book, read it and you will drift off naturally. You can also always get in touch with Eminem and ask his advice!

In fairness all you really need is 4 hours sleep to stay alive, anything else is just luxury so you are not as tired. I ..... read that somewhere.

Above post is true , males need only 4 hours sleep to function correctly the next day so don't worry. Plus your body will eventually get so tired you will drift off earlier than normal and you will go back to a normal pattern... well it's happened to me like that numerous times anyway :)

I build up a 'sleep deficit' during the week, getting only 4-5 hours a night. But I make up for it on the weekends. It is possible to exist on that amount of sleep although a good long kip is hard to beat...

Whack one out, that'll make you go asleep.

Big fat spliff. works for me, had major problems sleeping all throughout school / college. the only problem is the groggy feeling you get in the morning. takes an extra 15mins to wake up properly.

Well that's the thing, to get things completed quicker. Over the past few weeks/months, I've had to do allot of dealings with China and get information off Americans. China start work at 2am our time and finish at 10. I'd go to sleep with my laptop on a chair beside my bed and leave the sound up full volume so when an email would come in it would wake me up, I'd reply and go back to sleep the email may make me have to go ask a few questions on a forum so I'd then make a post and have to keep checking for replies every now and then. If I were to sleep through 2am-10am I would only be able to send 1 email per 24 hours so things will go much faster if I do the laptop beside bed idea. Then after I reply I'd lie in my bed thinking about all the things in the email and anticipating their next reply etc etc.

I can't stop thinking about things. What's a good way? My mind is constantly thinking of things, what to do, the best way to do it etc.

Is there anything out there that wont have any negative side effects that will send me into a deep sleep for about 8 hours straight?

Try drinking chamomile tea. Lavender is (for me, anyway) the best herbal sleep aid. If you can, try dropping into Lush on Grafton Street. They sell a bath ballistic called 'Waving Not Drowning' which is one of the best things ever to get you to sleep. Anyone I know that's used it has slept like the proverbial baby that night.

A pint of vodka does the trick for me.

Well I woke up after 7 and a half hours sleep, I have this thing that I feel I must get 8 hours, I didn't get the extra half hour anyway, I tried for about 5 mins but my mind was racing! Is chloraform (spelling?) safe to use on a regular basis? haha

You could always try hypnosis. There are lots of cds etc around that helps one enjoy a relaxing sleep...they can even be downloaded I'd say. Gotta be worth a try.

Count backwards from 10,000. This never fails for me, it stops you thinking about other things but it is so boring you just fall asleep.

(Obviously I generally fall asleep around 9,641, I don't count all the way back.)

I might actually give that a go! haha

Hypnosis? hmm. I have relaxing albums, I go to sleep with music on always anyway

When you wake up, there's always a point where you know you need to sleep some more, and another point where you're just going back to sleep because you're lazy - you wake up, mostly awake, and not drowsy. Try and recognise them.

If your work is mainly with Chinese/Americans, would it make more sense to alter your sleep period? Sleep say 2pm-10pm, then get up? You'll be bored, but you'll never be tired.

Ah you see that's the thing, my work is a 24 hour cycle, be talking to China in the morning, be trying to figure out what's wrong with my laptop on boards during the day etc etc. I'll try some of the suggested methods anyway:) Thanks everyone!
