IRCD Hosting In Ireland - is it a pipe dream?

    Hey there,

I'm a student starting the CCNA in september and I was hoping to gain a little bit of experience by setting up an IRCD. I'm also an avid IRCer and frankly I would enjoy the project. Do any of you know of a company that would host a shell account for me accommodating an IRCD? I know there are many in the UK but what I'm really after is an irish server for irish users.

I've had a look before at hosting IRCd's, and eggdrops from shells in Ireland, but from the companies I've looked their T&C's seem to prohibit it, so unless you're willing to fork up the cash for a dedicated server (still not sure about t&c's for that) I think ircd hosting in ireland is a distant pipe dream.

Purely out of interest - why would it still be a pipe dream?

Providing there's a server available, and bandwidth to boot - what would stop someone from simply running "./ircd"? :)

    Are there legal issues involved?

Would you need much bandwidth for that. Perhaps you could host it yourself.

While it's only text that's being passed back and forth - and it's highly unlikely that a startup ircd would prove to be massively popular, there are terms on any broadband account in ireland (imposed by the ISP's themselves) that say we can't have ANY sort of server open to the public side of the router.
Or at least - words to that effect.

    I think :)

*edit* and that includes hosting private games with your friends (most multiplayer games allow you to host your own game so that others can join it)
But it's rarely enforced (I haven't heard of a single complaint about it at least) and it would be ridiculous for an ISP to shut someone down for that reason.

Last time I checked it was against T&C's of the major hosts in ireland. I'd assume the same applies to dedicated servers.

They usualy ban it, due to it can be the destination of DOS attacks, botnet floods etc. IRC can be a very seedy place you know.

Yeah that's what I thought as well.

I was actually wondering if there were any higher rules regarding it - relating to actual use of internet bandwidth provided, maybe controlled by ComReg or something

i sent about 20/30 emails this morning to irish hosting companies asking if they had anything that would suit me. i had thought about buying a little server and running it from home. i'm only willing to spend a few hundred euros on the server though(dell have a nice flatbed one here http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pedge_sc1425?c=ie&cs=iebsdt1&l=en&s=bsd ), maybe even buy one second hand - afterall for the moment i'm just planning to run an ircd on it! where can i buy a cheap flatbed server? googling server or "buy server" brings up a load of irrelevant hits and komplett don't seem to sell any. hell for the moment i'm just going to keep googling shell hosting on google.ie (search pages from ireland only) and emailing them - i just need one to say yes! regarding rules for ircds blacknight.ie told me earlier that is was agaist there AUP - though i was also told "our network security admin will probably contact you after the weekend".

Jesus - MONEY TO BURN!! :)

Get yourself an old pc - maybe a P3 and you'll have (much) more than enough juice to run your IRCD on a nice and stable linux platform :)

what about building one? can you build your own rackmont server? :) if i were to find a cheap rackmont server (great for space saving because i live in a bedsit - money to burn i have not!) would it melt sitting on my desk?
