Can't turn off while on batteries

I posted this topic a few weeks ago but got no replies so here goes again:
After I have my laptop on batteries for a certain length of time I am unable to turn it off except by pressing and holding down the power button.
    I just get the egg-timer when I go start-turn off computer-turn off.
    Any ideas?

Does it stay like that indefinatly, or just for a long time?

Does it turn off while plugged into mains? sounds strange u say when on batteries, indicating its power source problem.

I presume it won't turn off at all, I don't wait to see, I just turn the power off.

Yeah, no problem turning it off when it's on the mains.

I think it's something to do with a small window that appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen which I can't close.
I can't actually start any of the quick-launch icons in the bottom right-hand corner. Like I said, the problem doesn't occur the very minute I start it on batteries, just after a half-hour or so of use.
