    Hi Everyone,

Just started new job, and am ussing g5 dual 2.7 Ghz mac with 2gig of ram. Now i am using it for video editing using final cut pro, but lately i have found that i am getting crashes for no reason in FCP and also now in other programmes too! Any ideas of what could be wrong? Could it be memory or is there any software that i can run on the machine to test the hardware?

    HELP!!!

    Ted

Very possible that you need to reinstall your system software.

    I don't think it's a hardware problem.

If you want you can get Disk Warrior, that will basically restructure you whole hard drive tree and fix any inconsitancies.

Or you can get Norton for the mac and see if that comes up with anything.

i'd run the software updater and make sure you have all your updates installed....its in the apple menu.

failing that i would make the effort to re-install from scratch...its a pain in the arse but seeing as you are using it for vid editing its worth making sure the machine is fighting fit

If you've just started then it's probable that whoever had the machine before you would have installed strange things and generally messed around with it. I'd say a clean re-install with Tiger, followed by a full update will sort things out. If that doesn't help then yes it's possible that dodgy a hard-disk or memory is to blame.

Where are you doing the new job? Get the techie guy / gal there to reinstall system & software and set up a brand new user with appropriate privileges. No telling what way the machine has been fscked around with prior to your using it, so a clean system is your best bet. It's unlikely to be a hardware issue. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you need formal support.

If you don't have a techie guy / gal there to support you, you can get official distributors likeTyrell to do it for you. But you'll be paying for their professional support.

Do NOT use any Norton product with system 10.xx. Norton is not supported on your mac and will only result in file damage or worse. Use Disc Warrior as recommended and then leave your mac on overnight....there are a number of file and cach utilities that only operate during the early hours of the morning. There is a program caled Janitor that will also do this for you. Norton is definitly not the way to go.

Agreed with that. Norton will only pick up bugs that it can recognise anyway, so even that will only a small amount of the battle to sort out your crashes. Did you check your crash logs in Systems Profile to see what was the listed reason for the crash? That will tell you where the initial problem is; also what OS are you using and Final Cut?
