    Samsung SpinPoint P120S 250GB SATA2 8MB 7200RPM NCQ @ €127 from komplett

    Quiet and Quick.

What Dundhoone said. They're very good. I have the 200GB version. It's nearly inaudible. The performance of it isn't great (based on the built in windows benchmarking tool: 60MB/s sustained, 140 burst) but the 250GB version offers better performance AFAIK.

If you have lots of money, the SATA2 raptors should be out soon. They're very very very nice (but expensive).

    ok, ill look into it.

So theres now way of accessing archives? (on boards)

Have 2 X 37GB WD Raptors Raid 0 in my system. They are good but as said expensive. Have you a link to the SATA2 ones Khannie?

Ding: I have no linkage for SATA2 raptors, if that's what you mean. :) It's idle speculation on my part that they'll be out soon. I would have gone for a raptor for my own machine except they weren't SATA2 (and therefore limited in RAID0). WD has to know that it will affect sales if they don't get the SATA2 version out soon.

If you meant the Samsungs: I got them from komplett. I got the 250 > 200 thing from an article on anandtech (I think) when I was looking for info on the drives. Overall couldn't be happier with it though. The silence is astounding.

Could you do me a favour and tell me what data rates you get from the built in speed test on windows for your raid array? (It may be an nforce only feature).

Roamer: There's a search facility for boards. It's near the top of the web page.

    Hi Khannie

It was the info on the Raptors I was looking for. Google didn't find anything but I guess your right anyway.

Here and here are some tests I have from a while ago. Knew they'd come in handy. ;) The full thread on it is here.

    Nice thread there Dingatron.

Looks like the single raptor is about the same as 2 normal drives in raid0. Interesting. *rubs chin*

Your setting probably lists threads only from the past thirty days. Easy to change to longer - just look at the clickdown at the bottom of the page when you're in the list of threads on the forum. They're not archives, they're just old.

There was a problem with using the search function when searching posts older than a certain date (whenever we changed to vb3 a good few months back) though. No idea if they've been re-indexed but the posts themselves are still there and listed if you change your settings all the way back to 1998.

    Ahhh... Thanks sceptre

Will go with the samsung I think.
Have had some nasty experiences with those maxtors myself too.

To say a nice word about Maxtors, I have had five going for several years and not a bother with them.

I've found the Maxtors OKish myself, though they do occasionally have that sticking-requiring-a-surgical-bang-to-get-going problem. Not that it's common but I've had that problem myself and I've seen it mentioned by others. I went Samsung last time I upgraded the second hard drive in my machine (and it's always a bit of an occasion when I do as the last drive was 10GB, replaced by a 120GB and I'm not in any real hurry again). No hassle whatever with the Samsung.
