Reception of US channels in Ireland

Does anybody know if it is possable to receive US channels via satellite? I am curious as US programs are shown earlier over there and are only made available here a few months after a particular series has finished showing.

At present they are showing SG Atlantis on the US Sci-Fi channel, they started around the 22nd July and it will not be shown here until christmas. This is just one of the reasons why I would like to get US channels. I know it is possable to receive the signals as BBC often shows pictures from ABC and Sky News broadcasts the CBS news program live every night at midnight.

Are there stations FTA or scrambled, if so what system do they use?

not a hope unless you catch various feeds. the feeds are what BBC, Sky etc. use for rebroadcasting american newscasts

alternatively you can get your "cousin" to send the programmes to you

    In Ireland NO.
We are beyond the American footprint.

There are some European packages which rebroadcast American channels
    e.g.
Sky Italy carries Fox and Fox Life
    unless you're really desperate
it's very expensive to get SKY Italy in Ireland.

there are also some which specialise in showing American sports such as
    Orbit ESPN .
This too is difficult to get as you need a special receiver.

is the FOX in Italy the exact same as the FOX in the states? or is it another version like the FX we have over here?

I only had it for a short time.

You might recall a window period ;)

programs were up to date American sitcoms in English
    with Italian ad breaks.

    www.foxlife.it might be helpful

If Ireland is beyond the US footprint then the news feeds used by other broadcasters like Sky and BBC must be carried on a different satellite. What feeds could be received exactly?

If Sky Italia is carrying certain US stations then they may be moved to the UK platform soon enough. If I could get the US Sci Fi channel I would be satisfied. Then I could watch the programs before Sky One starts showing them. Maybe it is on Sky Italia.

Satellites west of 12W tend to be the ones which carry US news feeds. The drhans site often carries screengrabs.

An increasing number of feeds are encrypted.

About 10 years back I remember seeing feeds for new season Star Trek episodes being carried on analogue NTSC. But the majority of that stuff is now being sent by fibre optic cable.

looking at the FOXlife link they show several things like Desperate Housewives which wasnt shown on FOX in america. i believe ABC or CBS had that. so they are international versions. the only US channel that is available over here that i can think of is FOX News. if there is any others feel free to add

You can get TV from the US with the help of someone in the US with a reliable broadband connection, a few grand, and a broadband connection where you are.

By connecting TV2Me to a set top box in the US, you (and only you, for rights reasons) can access all the channels via the web wherever you are. It's US$4750 plus shipping and whatever taxes are payable.

SlingBox is cheaper, although it's a bit awkward as they don't yet have a fully-fledged PAL version. Some people have managed to tweak the NTSC version, but anyway, the PAL version should be available later this year.

Mamma mia! I thought the Italians wouldn't watch anything from the US unless it was dubbed!

Unfortunately SlingBox won't start producing non-US versions until the first quarter of this year :( which means that they've put it back by six months or so. TV2Me's website says that Sting uses it, but he's got money to burn.

If they can get the price down to $400 then they'll have a world-beating product, that's for sure.

    Stranger things have happened

TV2Me's boss man told me that:
The number of connects to the server is limited only by
available upstream bandwidth. At 384 kb/s for instance, a "usual" DSL or
cable uplink will accommodate one connection. A 768 kb/s link will
accommodate two. While TV2Me is designed as a unicast system, several
commercial users do run multiple connects to their own programming.

This means that if you had an 8MB connection, like in the UK, or 20MB, like in France, then loads more people could access channels on the same server, or with SDSL (leased line) even more.

DON'T Discuss methods of accessing pay-TV systems, the content of which is not meant to be viewed in the Republic of Ireland or the United Kingdom. .

Why not? Nanny state alert!
