New Passport Steps

Hi there,
I may need a new passport within a week. Just have a few questions.

Is the only time I will need a passport for travelling in the airport?
Where in Dublin is the passport office? Is there one in Wicklow, where?
Where do I get the forms?
What do I need to provide with the forms?
How much will it cost?
Can I get it there and then or do I have to wait a few days?
Can I get ask for a pink one?

just a few things I'm unsure of..

I thought if you queue in the passport office you can get it there and then? If so, is the fee the standard €75?

What proof of identity do I need and who do I need to show this to?

I had a passport and I can't remember where it's gone too. It's out of date, will I have to file a lost passport report or will this not make a difference?

Can I do everything in the passport office or must I get the photos signed by a Garda? Are the forms in the Garda Station too?

I need this in about a week, Passport Express is 10 working days, it says if I go to the passport office it will take 2 weeks but if I have airline tickets as proof it can be marked as urgent. How long will it then take?

No, you do not get the passport there and then in the passport office. Go in a.s.a.p. (e.g. tomorrow) and apply for an emergency passport - this will be more expensive, but it's your only option now.

You do need your old passport - so find it.

You do need your photos to be stamped by the Garda station.

The passport will be made in time for your holiday - probably the day before you leave. But get a move on, is this the first time you've ever got the passport for yourself or something? You seem woefully prepared...

Yup daddy did all the work last time, I just had to follow him around to the Garda Station. That plus a sudden "let's go on holiday" plan :rolleyes:

Do you have any idea how much the "urgent" one is?

Go in with all the forms filled in etc, your old passport and your tickets for travel and they should be able to give you one at short notice. They may charge an extra €50 euro though. If your passport is lost, there's a section on the application form for this.

Europe, not too sure, cheapo late deal package hollier, Lanzarotte, Tenerife, Gran Canaria all for under E500 each for 2 weeks inc return flights, not bad.

technnically you dont need a passport for inter Europe travel but i wouldnt chance it at all.

Quick steps:

1. Get 2 passport pics
2. Get to a cop shop with PHOTO ID
3. get em to sign forms & pics
4. get bus to town (if you can find passport great other wise DO NOT SAY ITS LOST ((they will only give you a 1 year passport for the full 10 year price if you say its lost)) say you burnt it when it expired or the likes)
5. queue for ages
6. explain the situation
7. get em to process it
8. go home
9. return in x days for passport
10. go on hols

a friend of mine managed to get one last year, he found out at about 2 in the afternoon he was going to be flying somewhere, realised about 4 o'clock that his passport was out of date. He managed to get an emergency passport done before eight that evening, only a 12 months jobbie mind you. I believe that it cost about €150 to get it done.

Ah ja hay iz us! €150 :eek: I might just take the risk of going Express! 10 working days, hmm, it's pushing it. I'd be leaving in about 9 days. Is it 10 minimum or max does anyone know? Anyone have any friends who work there?

10 WORKING days as in Mon-Fri x2.
Yes go ahead and risk it, just don't come crying here when it doesn't arrive in time.

why do so many people leave it to the very last minute to get passports anyway?

I reported my passport as lost and they gave me a new 10 year one.

This is not a personal comment (seeing as you switched me onto Rockbox on another forum!) but DON'T BE A MUPPET by going Express. You have no Plan B if 10 days turns into 11. Or if there's a quibble with your application. (I called in person to the Passport office a few days ago and realised I'd left out my mothers maiden name. If this had been a postal application i'd have been screwed!)

It's quite simple.

Get the forms. Get the photos. Get them stamped. Get the money. Get proof of your immediate need to travel. Get a good book. Get your arse down to molesworth street. Get a Seat. Do Not Pass Go. Do Not Collect £200. Get your passport on the day or as soon after. Travel with peace of mind.

Man, just go and get the damn emergency passport.

The express passport will be done in ten working days. Very unlikely that it'll be any less.

I've had passport express back in 8 days before but yeah, it's not worth the risk.

you see I havent actually booked the holiday or anything yet, I just see a good deal with departure date of 28th of Aug. But there are others from the 9th of Sept and all. Do you get the emergency passport there and then? So all people queing in Mollsworth are in the queue for an emergency passport? I have no proof of flights which may be a problem. What if I just say all I have is €75 when I get to the top of the queue? Because that is really all I have anyway to spend on a passport:(

You cannot get a quickie passport (i.e. the one that attrats the €50 surcharge) unless you can present proof of need. You need to be going in the next ten days.

your choice seems to be spend the extra fifty quid on a flight a few days later (where you have a CLEAR ten days for passport express to work it's magic by post) or fly now-ish and get a quickie.

So are the people in queue at Mollsworth all going to have to pay the extra for the URGENT and will they get it then and there or is this also a way to speed up the express method?

Also, what do I say since I have no proof of flights since they aren't even booked yet? And even if I did have them booked, what's the scenario? Do I print out a ticket or what? I'm all new to this travel malarky

Are they ALL paying the 50 at molesworth street? Yes.

Do they have proof of need of passport in next ten days? Yes

Will they be told to use Passport express if their date of travel is in more than ten days? Probably. (They have signs there saying 'you must show proof')

Express is ten days. That's the guarantee. You either need it in less than ten days or you don't. internet 'whim' bookings assume that you've a valid passport. You can't trade one off the other. Whether you like it or not, it's a valuable security and identity document that the government needs to validate. This takes time. They'll fasttrack you on the day in the office if needs be. They Passport express service won't. I'm sure it is a 'pity' that you can't bung a few extra bob in the passport express service envelope for a quicker service but you can't. I don't see that changing in the near future.

What do you say if you've no proof of flights? AFAIK you don't go to Molesworth Street. They'll tell you to shag off. As I said above, you can either commit to a very up and coming flight and go in with your €50 or don't. You can't have it both ways.

When you do have the booking made, the Ryanair itinerary or whatever you get will suffice.

My express passport was exactly ten days too. It's unlikely you'll get it sooner. August is the busiest month for the passport office. If you need it sooner, you go in now and wait.

passport express it is then, I wont be booking the holiday any time soon have to wait for my friend to get his act together. Sure I can go on holls at a later date:)
