Apparently they were handing out free tickets to this gig in Marlay Park in town today. Maybe they'll do the same tomorrow?

wtf? Extremely doubtful, come on, the tickets are worth €50. I was in town today and all I got was a Bud Rising visor :p

I got a free ticket to the Chemical Brothers today. Wasn't given it on the street but I got one nonetheless.

There was 9000 people in the point when I saw them in 2000 and it was one of the best gigs Id ever been at. Where did this 5000 figure come from anyway?

    From reliable sources :).

    Those guys eh?
Well if everyone kinda all huddles together we'll do ok. Or get drunk enough to see double. Frankly I think 5000 people will be great providing it isnt too spread out.

5,000 will be great if it means getting free tickets.

Yeah, my mate rang me on Tuesday night telling me that he had a free ticket for me. Only problem is that I bought one on Tuesday afternoon, and haven't been able to shift it.

    Meh, the chems rock.

I got free ones too for tonight. But thats cos I too am a resident. I hope to get some for underworld too. It sure saves buying them.

That would rightly piss me off if I had bought tickets. The fewer the better at a gig I say, give you a chance to get closer to the front, less queues at the bar and toilets, no bastards screaming or talking crap around you since they are not interested in teh gig at all. I do not see the advantage for the promoters, except maybe more bar reciepts. They will have to lay on more security, bigger cleanup etc.

    Quick review.

Certainly when I arrived (around 7) the place looked totally barren. Maybe about 300 / 400 people in front of the stage listening to whoever preceded Sonic Youth. Most sitting on the grass.

Sonic youth had a pretty mixed set in my opinion. Ive listened to a few of their albums and enjoyed them but I wouldnt call myself a fan. I think theyd be amazing in a venue like Vicar Street but I felt they went from playing long slintesque ballads to fast crowd pleasers with a bit too much thought. It was almost... this song is for our fans... this song is for the people whove no idea whats going on. I could see what they were trying to do but it wasnt the venue for it and I felt theyd have been better off sticking to one plan or the other. Im sure hardcore fans lapped it up but casuals or newbies would have been generally confused by the lack of continuity.

I didnt make it to the second tent but friends of mine who did said there was a lot of noise bleed coming from the main stage while they watched Jaque Le Cont. Other than that they didnt really comment on his gig.

By Chemical Brothers the place had filled up a bit. Plenty of room to dance though. First half of the gig was amazing with several straight plays of favourites such as Hey girl hey boy and Galvanise mixed with remixes of several older songs never letting up until the end of star guitar midway. I dont know why exactly but they stopped there for a bit of waving at the crowd... which is a shame because it upset the pace. It took a good ten minutes to get going again after that but by the end (Chemical Beats) I was well happy. Visuals were amazing as always and goddamnit Im still a sucker for lasers. In total they were probably on stage maybe 80minutes but it was filled with such quality it seemed like twice that. An excellent gig.

Sonic Youth kicked ass(but that could be a baised opinion from a hardcore fan, left before Chem Bros :p ).

"This song is called Schizophrenia" wow! Then Drunken Butterfly, the highlight IMO, whole crowd singing "I love you, what's your name". The Nurse stuff was good but I'm disappointed there was no Daydream Nation stuff(seems they opted to play songs off Sister rather than DN).

So in short, Sonic Youth were excellent, sound was great, and I was dead centre against the barrier, the only thing wrong with it was it was too short and the crowd didn't really get going apart from during Drunken Butterfly, but I enjoyed it :p

I thought both bands were excellent. I think Sonic Nurse is the best thing they've done in years so I was delighted to hear loads off it. I saw Sonic Youth at Witnness a few years ago and they sucked hard. I was really disappointed but last night they won me back as a live band. The Chemical Brothers were deadly, I didn't know most of the new stuff, I've only got Dig Your Own Hole and Surrender. Amazing light show!

I heard there were 6000 tickets sold and 2000 given out free.

    great gig

    Wtf?
I thought sonic youth were the shíttest band I've heard in my life. After the first two songs I just wanted them to get off, learn how to play music!!

The chemical bro's were great, I didnt know most of their new stuff but it was still really good. I got alot of pics from it.

Open your ears, it is music. Personally I didn't think they were noisy enough.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose

For me everything preceeding the Chems on the main stage sucked. I thought Sonic Youth were completely different, but seeing them live spoilt that image. How and ever, I was completely disappointed with the Chems, they just couldn't live up to the tent. Tiga and Jacques Lu Cont absolutely rocked. I should have gone on to Temple bar to catch the rest of their show but didn't.
The crowd were good, don't really know how many were there in the end but it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.

jaques lu cont did put on a good show i must say..

I know, but I've looked at setlists for their Sonic Nurse shows and it seems they usually either do one or two songs off DN or Sister.
