Man with a Van?

Just looking for some feedback on this idea...

I'm full time in college(mature student) and don't really want to get a regular part-time job during the college term. I can get by without but was thinking of picking up a cheap old Ford Transit (or equivalent) and looking for casual work as a 'Man with a Van' :)

Does anyone know someone who does this or can think of pros/cons that I might be missing?

The main advantage is of course my own hours so can work when and however much I want. I'm working out running costs at the moment so I can get a rough idea of how much I'd have to do to cover tax and ins but other than that I reckon this is a goer.

    Any thoughts?
What would you like from such a service?

The biggest con that I could see might the irregular frequency that you might get work at.

Only thing I would suggest is you try to narrow down your target market. I've not thought about it long enough but have a good chat with friends and family and ask them to come up with suggestions for why someone might want to hire a man with a van! Then concentrate on the most suggested reason and make it your target market.

    Ask yourself

What problem am I solving for people?
What solution are you providing? You're not just providing a van.. A courier can do the same job. What will make you unique and stand out in the marketplace?

As to aidans comment that you might find work infrequent I would say this is a challenge facing anyone in self employment....

    Insurance?

And you will work to customers hours, not your own. :(
