    @Mike Litoris

Can I ask you a quick question....the das clay sculptures you did, was it just normal acrylic paint and yacht varnish you used? Have they withstood the elements?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,446 ✭✭✭Mike Litoris

It actually has! There are some cracks and lumps gone out of it but it hasn't fell apart yet and it's been out in the elements for the last 2 years! Even the solar lights I built into it are still going. Yes, just regular old cheapy acrylics and a can of spray yacht varnish. I reckon an extra coat of that varnish when the 1st dries will give it an extra couple of years.

Brilliant thank you! I have the clay, paint and jars so going to do something with the kids during winter.... should be interesting on so many levels 😂🤣🤣

  • Impressionist landscapes and dogs are my favourite subjects, but also cartoons & satiric photoshop efforts & gifs

    Gone sideways alas

Those are sooooo beautiful with a handcrafted keepsake design. Lovely work.

I could never do anything like that.

Thanks, I knitted them from a pattern designer, yes sock knitters actually pay for patterns 😄, mostly so I don’t have to do the maths for multiple sizes as I will knit a pair for multiple people in my family if I really like the pattern. I get pretty bored if I’m just knitting plain round & round.

I watch youtube as I knit so no boredom! And vary the basic patterns as the mood takes me.. Lovely to work with coloured yarns in weather like today..

@kadman , absolutely stunning. The craftsmanship in creating that is amazing. Beautiful.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,126 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

    Thankyou.

It is a nice feature that i put a lot of emphasis on to match the flowing lines of the piece itself.

Its part of the piece that she likes herself😀

When you use choose yew for a project, you are 3/4 way to a nice piece.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,126 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

    Thankyou.

For me its a lot easier because I love working with wood, especially yew. And because of that, its not a work project, its an enjoyable experience in revealing the beauty of the medium. I think an ordinary yew log has a beauty all of its own.😀

For anyone who's not familiar with Kadman's skills, take a look at this thread (among others). The man is a genius. The original thread about that car is a treat, too.

@kadman, please don't get a big head, now.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,126 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

😄😄 Ha Ha. I think genius is well stretching it.

I like a challenge, and i like to test myself to get a good result. Thats it. I take my time, and dont get too stressed when it does not go to plan.

Luckily things went well on the sculpture, and going well on the car, what can i say, lady luck is with me at the moment.

No, I think genius is the right word... after all, they do say that it takes one to know one.... right? 🤪😉

Well far be it from me to start a fight....maybe you could be right😁

I don't know about other folk's experiences, but following the loss of my father in 2021 I have found it incredibly hard to get back to painting regularly.

These two are really the most recent things, and they date from August last year, a couple of views of Portrane/Donabate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,189 ✭✭✭Wolff

My own father died in 2021 as well Ciderman, the 1st christmas after he passed I came up with the idea of putting a calendar together with paintings from that year - he had a thing for calendars - he would have loved it

It was hard to get motivated again but I found painting a great way to deal with the grief - the old man was my biggest fan - I can't let him down now can I !

    Hi,

I'm only after reading this, and thank you very much for those words.

I am still finding it incredibly hard to put brush to canvas, but I hope to get there in the coming months.

And, as you say, you did something he was proud of and loved, the nicest way to pay tribute to that is to paint, and your work is spectacular

I did an evening woodwork course recently that touched on a little bit of wood carving. I wanted to learn a bit of D.I.Y but ended up getting bitten by the bug for carving/whittling. I made a table in the class with a carved flower. I bought a load of tools and knives then started trying little figures from basswood.

All these are from blocks of basswood which I bought except the branch which I found in the field!

The left 2 I used a solvent based antique pine wood dye. Furthest left 2 coats of dye and varnished. Second left I gave 1 coat of dye and a coat of Danish oil. The branch is just 2 coats of Danish oil. I made a mistake in coating the bark at the bottom which darkened and removed the detail. The Owl was a water based dark Jacobean dye then sprayed with lacquer. This was my first attempt and my least favourite. I'll learn by those mistakes.

I enjoyed the hell out of making these! Out the back in shorts with the good weather and some decent music! 🙂

There's a woodwork forum somewhere on the site, guaranteed someone there will be interested.

Got some decent whittling knives and gouges. It's so much easier with decent tools! Couldn't find a template for a cocker spaniel so eyeballed someone else's creation. Didn't quite get the proportions right and the eyes are a bit funky but I'm quite happy with the result and finish. Used a small block of basswood and dyed with 1 coat of Rustins light teak and 3 coats of Danish oil.

I’d love your thoughts on my new design: the “Stay Positive Shark Shirt". What do you think?

I’d love your thoughts on my new design: “Don't Touch My Phone Shirt". What do you think? It's a typographic illustration that reads "Don't Touch My Phone" which puts forward a bold statement regarding privacy.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on my latest design: the "Cerberus Shirt." What do you think? The design is a typographic illustration that cleverly spells out "Cerberus" while incorporating a fierce, dangerous-looking Cerberus character blended together to capture the essence of this mythical three-headed guardian.

I have started making these lads from rocks picked up on the beach in Wexford using a Dremel 8220.

Stole the idea from something I saw on Pinterest, so far from original 😔

New to this…. have some other ideas in the pipeline

Started an evening drawing and sketching course tonight. I think I inadvertently drew Melania Trump!😂

Despite looking nothing like the original I'm quite happy with the effort on the right.

I don't know about the other creative folk on here, but grief really made painting hard for me over the past couple of years, since Dad passed away.

But, in the last two weeks, after some false starts and poor efforts I didn't enjoy a moment of, I finally painted something and really enjoyed it.

This is a painting of a walk in Portrane, next to where I work. I took the photo preCovid, and it took this long to be able to paint it.

Then, it only took 4 and a half hours!
