I am using Toshiba M30 laptop with standard factory fit modem........ Worked perfectly daily for the last year, however, I recently started using broardband and then when I needed to dial up internet recently from my parents house I got this PORTS problem.... "Error 633 : Opening port... modem in use or not configured"

Tried to re-install modem but no joy.... any ideas what might be going on ? Did BB installation affect the modem ports ? Firewall issues ?

Pretty desparate to get this sorted as I will need access when I'm there again next week !!!

    Thanks,

    D

right click your internet exporer icon/select 'connections' make sure it is set to 'Allways dial my default connection. On broadband this is usually reset to 'Never dial a connection' as your using your lan port probably.

first thing I check for anyway and usually sorts it :)

Well he is obviously getting the dialog for dialing so that kinda rules out what smeggle said. From I remember the modems in tosh laptops can be quite ****e to be brutally honest.
You could try setting it to use a different com port but to be honest it reeks of hardware failure

em yeah - he will thats why he's getting the 633 error. you'll get the comp to try dialing but it won't because you've configured the modem to 'Never Dial a Connection'. Hence the possible reason for the 633 error :)

Tried changing the port, but each one I select is "already in use".. any easy way to find a free port ?

Not Dial up issue.... can't even send or receive fax..........

Would have to agree with Asok. Looks like hardware failure. I had the same problem with an A30. Tried changing ports (3&4) but made no diff. I switched the modem from an old Tosh laptop and was back in business. You can get external modems now very cheap so it might be worth it

    Thanks Odie,

Actually had ActivSync loaded which I have now removed but still the same problem....

This is really annoying at this stage......... any other tips....?? Might try to swap out the modem tonight, as I have an old laptop at home. (Is it easy to do ?) Is there any other way to check if the modem is functioning properly. The diagnostic looks oK except for this port error !!!

    Thanks for everything so far...

Try the modem on a different PCI slot, failing that you can get a modem in PCWorld for 15 yoyo's.
