I'm not a dedicated advertising or marketing person. I have marketing of new products as part of my responsibilities. Almost totally focussed on marketing specialist products to industry.

    Anyone else in the field?

I've been in marketing for 10+ years , mostly direct marketing, also worked in online / advertising agencies as an account manager / strategist, worked as marketing manager for an intl software solutions company, started by own new media agency late 90's , now back in direct marketing (b2b) again.

could be an interesting forum !

Definitely, I look forward to learning from you both :)

I came into marketing from technical sales fairly recently so I've much to learn etc.

Plus it has fascinated me since I was young :) I love the intricate nature of selling to businesses. I don't find consumer marketing as interesting. Mostly due to a bias against it from working in consumer sales. It's a sickening job at times imho.

I have had 2 years selling TV airtime for a sales house and 1 year buying it in an agency. Then 3 years planning national and local campaigns across all media and now 2 and a half years selling local radio.

Happy to answer any questions I can.

No I was using technical in the traditional context. Industrial electrical equipment, safety gear, repair and sourcing services for the most part. Target markets, Irish Rail, ESB and the larger private industrial companies.

A long long way from software ;) It's a very small and very specialised area.

Before moving to dublin when i was in Milan i used to work on a music promotion agency taking care of promotion of some minor italian singers and bands on tv and radio.
It made me sad see that in ireland there's so little about music business anyway...

I'm doing a BBS in UL at the moment, majoring in Marketing, minoring in data analysis. Only one year left and it looks like i'll have a 2.1 degree.

    Horray says you!

Says me: every second person in this country seems to have a degree in marketing and marketing jobs in Ireland are scarce and really only in Dublin.
Because supply far outweighs demand, marketers don't get paid too well starting off.

Cost of living in Dublin for one year is €24,000-€28,000, and thats without a mortgage but with rent.
What does the average marketing graduate start on? I bet my last soldier for my soft boiled egg its nowhere near that....even before tax.

Which is why oz is a callin! Unless someone can prove me wrong!!!

Because marketing gets branded as sales by a lot of people the starting salary can be around€18,000-€22,000

    Ah,time to help the apprentice.

I qualified last summer with a b.des in Industrial Design and found I had quite a flair for the Graphic Design end of things, photoshop, macromedia flash and the like.I also enjoyed the marketing and business end of it.

So after the compulsory post-college trip around the globe,I'm back to face the big bad world.I'v been thinking about trying to get into design in the advertising end of things,be it web-based or literature (for want of a better word:magazine, publishing etc) based.

So is there much out there for a designer to get into,do they have alot of input into projects and also, does anyone know if its common for companies to take on graduates straight out of college?Every job that is advertised looks for atleast 2 years experience.Quite frustrating but I suppose they dont wanna be wasting their time

I'm a freelance copywriter, who spent ten booze-filled years in ad agencies here and abroad, before deciding upon self-unemployment five years ago.

The industry probably has more than its fair share of complete tools - see http://www.creativeireland.com and its advertising/marketing board if you doubt it - but it's still a great business to be in.

Nowhere else can you stare blankly into space, with your feet on the desk, and still be able to scowl at someone entering the room for interrupting your 'creative flow'. Life is good. I'm lovin' it.
