I have broadband which i know you need to have a firewall but on dial up is it required?.
The reason I ask this is because a friend has ask for a free alternative to norton(who has little computer knowledge).
    I was going to suggest:
anti-virus: avast and stinger (maybe avg more user friendly??)
    firewall: zonealarm
anti spyware: adaware, spybot search and destroy, ms anti-spyware.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
    cheers

While the computer is connected to the internet via dial up it is at the same risk as a computer on broadband, except for the fact that a broadband pc is connected to the net constantly putting it at greater risk, You'd be better off getting one.

The address of a PC on dial up is just as likely to be randomly scanned as one on broadband while either is on and connected to the internet. PC's on BB have been taken over (not just probed) in under 30 seconds.

On dialup you may probably be ok to be on for 30 seconds simply because the exploit would take to long to upload, any longer is a definite risk.

anti-virus: AVG free - best there is
firewall: zonealarm - again best free one available

    anti spyware:
    adaware - not bad
spybot search and destroy - definately required!
ms anti-spyware - You are jking aren't you? Definately a big no no!! Period!
