    Microsoft confirms Xbox 360 prices

There's premium and there's non premium

By INQUIRER staff: Wednesday 17 August 2005, 14:44

THE VOLE has moved to end speculation about the price of its Xbox 360 systems by publishing the prices of its premium and standard systems.

It said the Xbox 360 will arrive by Christmas, several months ahead of the competition - Sony.

Microsoft is offering the Xbox 360 in two versions, premium and bog standard.

The Xbox 360 premium will cost $400 in the US, €400 in the EU, and £280 in the UK. The console's list of features is pretty well known - it will have a wireless controller, a customisable faceplate, an HD-AV cable, a 20GB detachable hard drive, and at launch a media remote control for a little while.

The standard version will cost $300, €300 and £210, with a standard AV cable as well a wired controller and a swappable faceplate.

Both will use three core processors which include support for 720p/1080i graphics, 16x9 cinematic aspect ratio, anti-aliasing, surround sound and DVD.

Microsoft will also offer a huge range of accessories including memory units, hard drives, play and charge kits, rechargeable battery kits, headsets, and the media remote. µ

wonder what the performance difference is without the 20gb hd. cant be too much if the games will play from the dvd without it. probably just means no downloadable content.

I'd say the price wont drop significantly (or at all) until the ps3 is launched and that could be a loooong time.

    You're probably right.

Think i'll take the plunge with is sooner rather than later, sick of the way you always have to upgrade the pc to play newer games. only have the xbox a year and a bit so wasnt hugely impressed by it when my laptop was better..

€400? No thanks. I wouldn't mind but the majority of games coming out for it will be on all the current generation of consoles too.

    ...ahem...

    WILL IT BE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,300 ✭✭✭CiaranC

Stick on a second controller and a game and you are looking at 500.

*edit* Backwards compatability will be provided via emulation, for selected titles only at launch, and with more to come later.

I bought the xBox 2 games and extra joy pad the day it came out. Cost something like £500 which was a hole weeks wages for me at the time (a lot of over time worked that week).

    Never again!

I'll wait till the price comes down €15 - €100 before i buy it

Yes sort of. Since the hardware has changed ms have to do some rejigging to get xbox titles to work. So expect to see a lot of popular titles get the go ahead. Bargain basement games will have to wait a while if at all.

    whats the headset thing about?

the headset is used to talk to other people via xbox live., seriously, if anyone is planning on buying this console, your wasting €300 on the cheapo version, shell out the extra €100 for all the extras, cos a hard drive, headset, wireless controller, and media remote will cost about €300+ 300€ for console = €600
so buy the €400 one with all the extra's!!

    i doubt it!

the cheaper, €300 version, without the hdd will not be backwards compatible, because the emulation patchs downloaded from live will have no where to go.
