A true salesman can sell anything, to anyone.

    Zen, but true.

What I think he means is does it involve cold-calling, calling people back, answering phone calls, or is it face-to-face sales?

No. I disagree. Like the_syco said: the methods used, the product field, the target market all make a huge difference. I know guys that could sell anything over the phone but who really suck at selling anything face to face. It's a different ball game.

Also, the difference between someone who's been exposed to customer care and one who has only cold called is huge.

Also, it is important for potential applicants. I've done my share of consumer sales and have no wish to do it again. It's far nice on the business side of sales imho.

Plus true salespeople are both a rare and expensive commodity. It takes a lot of experience and the right kind of person to make one. Experience is a huge thing in sales.

A true salesman doesn't care. And experience is only a factor if you're not the aforementioned true salesman. Sure, you can train someone to do it, but they'll never be as good as someone that was born to it. And that's not what I was talking about anyway. And this belongs in Humanities anyway. And I'm pretty sure I'm banned from there anyway. So I'll shut up now anyway!

adam /not a true salesman, but from a family of them

Agreed, this isn't the place :)

Don't mind LundiMardi, he's just pissed off cos I called him an asshole in PI, and now he's following me around in that creepy, knicker-sniffing way some folk do when you draw their attention.

Arguments from PI either stay in PI or go to PM. They have no place here. Bringing em in here with you is a good way to get yourself banned.

Awww, now nesfie's upset! Bad bicycle-seat molestor!

(No idea why you split the genuine sales discussion with LundiMardi's troll, but there you go. Boards mods bamboozle again.)

I split it because the original thread was a job advertisment. I thought that the discussion of sales within the thread belonged somewhere else. :)
