Quitting job - summer/part-time

I want to quit my job. Im 17 and I work in Retail on a summer basis but promised them i'd work through college.

Reasons for quiting - boss is bit of dickheadd, constantly criticises me in subtle way, mild form of harressment, doesn't promote any belief in myself, just a petty narky **** who goes on the odd, i mean frequent power trip.

Leaving cert results 2moro, i have to work 11 til finish (could be up to 10 not sure, but def won't be off before 6). Been working hard all year, need this day off. Been working ****ty hours and weekends all summer, feel like summer has been **** because of it.

I want 3 weeks holidays, from aug to sept. Haven't asked for them yet and i have a strong feeling i won't get them.

Want to keeep up footie. I'd have to work sundays.

I'd have to work 2 week nights (might be a problem with college depending where i get) and 2 weekend days.

    Reasons for staying

    Young staff, sound.

Job is easy, handy to travel to. Pay minimum wage, provides me with money for college etc.

Experience? (of how to deal with dickhead managers)

if i leave - problems with reference! Finding another job hard. So if i hack out another 2 weeks then leave, reference might be better.

What do people think i should do?
I'll be honest, its 90-10 that i'll not bother going in 2moro and quit.

P.s He told me that if i ring in sick, he'll make sure i "wont get a job in this country". SO a bad reference is certain and a no answer to a "would u hire this person again?" question.

Can i quit by sending email or writing letter and not bothering ringing or going in or giving weeks notice. I know they can fire for me for anything during first year (probation) so can i leave wihout giving them this. I know they'd like a week but i don't think i have to give it to them.

    Advice appreciated!

would this happen to be a Irish supermarket chain who's motto is better value every day?

I'd prefer not to name the company, just looking for some advice firstly!

If you feel that strongly don't go in. Just dont mention it on CV and a reference wont matter. Its better to have though. Call in sick 2morro, and give your weeks notice when you go back. He can't hold a sick day against you.

You get dickhead managers in almost every work place for students. So get used to it. Just start growing a thick skin, and get on with whatever you do.

Lets face it, students are there to work the ****ty hours and get paid the ****ty wage. In four years time, they are at the top of the 'food chain' and the new students take their place. vicious circle.

If i ring in sick 2moro, it gives him the opportunity to let me go!! i don't want that. I realise about not mentioning them in my cv, but any astute manager will sniff something strange when they recieve a p45 with details of a job not stated on a cv!

    well,

i work said supermarket chain, and i i know 7 people who are getting results tomorrow and have to work,

    you have two options.

    1. dont turn up. this will 99% get you fired,
    2. get a sick note. if you have a sick note they cant touch you.

now, wager up what you think is the better option

if you dont turn up, you will lose your job, as for the bad referance, they cant give you one.

    all they can say is

    " Randomfella worked here from date x untill date y 2005. "

altho, in employment circles, that usually screams a bad referance.

When did you ask for the day off? is there more people in your position and do they all ahave to work?

i asked for the 17th off because it's my birthday, and because they want to give as many people the time off, they begged me to work, even tho i had requested the time off over a month a go.

    another factor is your age,

this is complete guess but i take it you want to go out for your results, seeing as you are 17 and are unable to get into nightclubs/pubs, this might be the reason he wont give you the time off

i also worked in a well known chain of supermarkets and had similiar experiences. Try to reason it out, will the money be needed for college - i'm not talking about drinking money but can you/your parents/guardians etc. afford to pay for travel/books etc. for college without this job.

You say you'll be required to do 4shifts a week? Trust me that won't be easy even if you're going to be an arts student with around 12hours a week.

Which do value more, this job or your education/future career???

While you're in college you'll get plenty of chances during the summer for full time temporary work, use these as your references.

oh and good luck with the results if you're an LC student!!!

Yeah 6 others getting results. Some had holidays already and they bargained to get them to work this day. i asked for nothing except this day. I asked for it 2months ago. I'll be fired before i show sick note!

i'll borrow i.d. for 2moro, hopefully. I dunno we(friends) haven't anything officially planned for the night but a stress free day would be gratefully appreciated. Its not all about the night more about just being free that day.

Manager won't give me time off because its policy they don't during stocktake, will allow me collect results but i just couldn't work after them. Plus i'll prob be quitting in next 2 weeks anyway taking into account the already stated factors in previous post.

Yes but i worked last summer and ill have enough saved to get through with maybe small help from parents.

i know, especially if im commuting to and from college 3 hours a day (2nd choice). People who did it last year, had to skip lectures sometimes.

    obviously career.

Thanks! I'll be honest though, i was more nervous 3 months ago about them, than i am know. Having said that, its going to be really close whether i get my first choice or not, which i've sort of pinned all my plans on.

Sorry for posting so much, just looking for some immediate advice.

From my knowledge of business studies, you can't avail of the Unfair Dismissal Act 1973 or something until you work for a year in your workplace. This doesn't apply to me. No union. I'm just a student with no rights.

AFAIK you can still go through all the procedures but since you haven't been there for a year the employer doesn't have to accept the decision will look for a link

looked hard but it says that if your there 13 weeks or more u have to give notice. I dunno how i'll give notice because its fairly immediate. i havent been there 13 weeks. By letter would be handiest.
