Laptop not connecting to secure websites

I have a packard bell laptop running Windows XP Home and using the lastest version of Firefox. It connects to the internet through a wireless linksys router and whenever i try and connect to a secure website i get a message saying that connection was refused at that adress.

I don't have this problem with my PC on the same network.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

Could it be a software firewall blocking access to SSL ports (443 afaicr)?
What about other browsers on that machine?

Well, what firewall are you using?
