Our surveyor recommended that the joint between the party wall and roof slope be packed with Rockwool fire stop separation or similar. Is this a job i could do myself?

He also sugested that the mild steel straps should be attached to the gable walls spaced at maximum 2m centres fixed to the gable wall and 2 No. ceiling joists and rafters adjacent the wall. What would be the approximate cost of getting this done.

I know this is lowest common denominator stuff and for that i apologise.

    Hi orl,

The firestop is fitted under the roof tiles or slates and usually on top of highly flammable bitumen based underlay which doesn't make sense, the felt should be cut and folded back on each side with the firestop sitting in top of the party wall.

Some do fit the Rockwool on the wall then run the felt over it again defeating the purpose.

To fit it you will need to remove 2 > 3 tiles wide up the roof and cut the laths and underlay, this could involve interfering with the chimney flashing.

Do Not Touch The Roof until you have spoken with your neighbour, you will be interfering with their roof as well, also if you cut the laths without staggering the joints you may weaken the structure.

The straps suggest your Surveyor has concerns about the way the trusses were installed, don't worry yours is but a minor problem compared to some, Kadman can expand on this part ;)

You will need a good quality drill to make sure you do not cause the blockwork on the gable to crack and use good quality anchors into both the wall and the timbers.

I'm afraid I can't help with the cost part.
