Study details threats to Eircom supremacy

Though Eircom is dominant in the Irish telecoms market, a new report from Current Analysis says the firm's enemies are at the gates.

According to researchers and analysts with Current Analysis, the dynamics in the Irish telecoms market are changing, with BT Ireland emerging as a credible alternative to Eircom in the fixed-line market. While Eircom still controls almost 80 percent of the market, the introduction of single billing means that players like BT Ireland and Smart Telecom now have a 21 percent stake.

The impact of this trend is apparent; Eircom's core fixed voice revenues have fallen from EUR651 million in 2003 to EUR538 million in 2005, the research firm notes. With its fixed-line revenues in decline, the report says that Eircom needs to increasingly turn to broadband, IP and mobile services.

This goes against the far far more detailed Citygroup Report which basically stated eircom can do what the hell they want since the DCMNR and ComReg are so weak.

The problem in Ireland has always been a mix of horrendously bad regulation and horrendously bad competitors. One can fix the other. Whether they will or not remains to be seen.

The Citi report is not a bad reflection of reality. The problem is now that ComReg remain scared. IOFFL and ALTO need to start making noise about the key issues. Price and demand stimulation. ComReg have enough angles to cleverly work the interim and old frameworks to their favour, fact is they wont. Not sure I agree entirely with either set of research ...like Smart Telecom getting Gross Margin of 48% to 50% on calls ....eh, don't think so!

Don't nail the competitors to the fence yet please. Times are changing. I expect a massive backdraft onto eircom now. Think of the amount of mobile bashing they've done in the past few years! Lets get the submissions.

Get the sub cap introduced into the fixed line market and have the WLR margin increased to 30% in line with the policy directions issued by Disco Dermo.

Increasing broadband availability and speeds should also be a priority, according to the report, which says that Eircom's current figure of 81 percent broadband coverage pales in comparison to BT Ireland's efforts in Northern Ireland to provide 100 percent coverage.

Eircom's swindle – misleadingly touting the figure of lines originating from broadband enabled exchanges instead of using the correct figure of lines that are capable to carry broadband – to hide the extraordinary poor 60% current dsl coverage is amazingly successful.

We should do more to stop this misinformation.
