Your keyboard seems to be doing alright... Sorry, couldn't resist.

Check out Argos, I know a few lads who got theirs from Argos. Also, any friends doing martial arts with you are usually good.

I get the impression the free standing ones are just for kids. for a proper punch bag you need to suspend if from the ceiling with a special yoke thing (technical term there).

ok for Celticfire, loz and TwoKingMick's benefit I'll type normally! If anyone knows of someone selling one secondhand too that would be alright.

All punchbags are the same tbh. Just get one that's heavy and get some gloves. Free standing bags (assuming you want a draped punchbag with a stand) can be got from Argos but they are pretty expensive. I just got a bracket for my punchbag and hung it from it. It's alot cheaper.

Ahh, Now I understand what you are saying..

I picked up my punchbag in JJB Sports for 50e, 4ft, about mid weight(Doesnt fly around when you punch it, but is not akin to hitting a bollard).
I get free boxing mitts and a hook too.

I got mine from argos - the longer of the two they had last season. Get a decent wall or ceiling bracket - mines on the decking with a ( hanging basket ) type bracket from woodies.

For extra fun - ask the missus to go and buy it for you and tell her ther're not that heavy -

i can't get one with a wall bracket 'cause it wouldn't fit anywhere in or outside my house, hence me wanting a free standing one.a hanging bracket thing sounds good though. How much did it cost?

IMO all punch bags are NOT the same! that said, you don't have to spend a mint to get one. Hayashi bags from the Martial Arts shop on Capel Street are a good buy at a reasonable price.

Have you thought about a free standing rack instead of a ground bag? I'd hate to have a non-swinging bag. You can them in most fitness equipment stores.

been considering getting a punchbag myself. I was looking at the one in The Argos booklet, but don't they charge seperately for the hanging bracket thingy??

I'm really only looking for a cheap, but reasonable quality, punchbag, one that I can also pratise my TKD kicks on too. Was hoping to hang it from the beam in my garage.

Are they really worth the buy??

i'd agree with rope they aint all the same, if u just boxing it a argos or hayashi one is fine but heavy bag needs to be made form leather not pvc

if you're talking about the small Bryan one i'd seriously advise you against buying it because i know someone who has it and the whole side seam on it split about two weeks after he got it.however that could just have been that specific punchbag 'cause i had a bryan one before and it was brilliant. but also that bryan one in the argos catalogue is really small and isn't really suitable for tkd kicks!

I think its a bryan one ok, its four foot long I think!!!

What lenght bag would you recommend anyway???

The hanging bags sold by Argos, JJB, Elvery's etc. are all much of a muchness. Canvas or vinyl cover, cloth filling, 20-30 kg weight. These bags are OK but they are barely heavy enough for serious hitting and will move around a lot even if you take care to snap your punches and kicks. Also, the cloth filling will settle to the bottom of the bag resulting in a soft upper part and a rock hard lower part.

The punch bag I would get if I could find a supplier in Ireland would be a "Powair" foam/water bag. These look great. They are heavier (around 40-80 kg) and because of the water filling there's no problem with settling. Anyone know if they are available in ireland?

As for free standing bags I have heard some bad reports about them. Have heard that they can move around a lot and be unstable. They're also quite expensive (199 is the cheapest I've seen - in vjhomefitness) and TBH i don't think they'd give the same satisfaction as a hanging bag.

Oh yeah, as Roper mentioned there are free standing racks available for hanging bags from. I don't know if these are such a good idea unless they are bolted to the floor underneath. The ones I've seen haven't been. IMO the best way to hang a punch bag is from a good solid wall bracket drilled into a solid wall. Or else a frame (maybe homemade if you're handy with a welder) set into a concrete floor.

What I'd love to do is put up a couple of telegraph poles ,around twelve feet high, about ten feet apart with a bar going across at about eight to ten feet high.Hang a bag off that and you can circle all the way around it and not have a wall getting in the way of your workout :)
In fact I might just do that, must call a friend works in the ESB ;)

Argos ( god i love argos ) also have ceiling brackets for exactly that - probably best to secure in the garage if you have one - as the missus gets upset if the bag swings in front of the tv........

As for argos bryan bags - had mine a while use 3 or 4 times a week - and no splits - however they do settle if left hanging - i take mine down and lay flat when not in use.......

bag before was a 5 foot leather thai bag from the kwon cataloge cost a mint - lasted a few months........so i think you can just get lucky with them - and the vynal ones arn't so bad
