this stuff: http://www.wartner.com/ works well. Available in The pharmacy without perscription. Basically freezes the wart off. Stings a little bit, but it's fine. A bit pricy too. I had to use a couple of applications to get rid of some warts on my hand.

I had a wart on the back of my hand when I was a kid. A relative told me to dip a red tipped match into vinegar, and rub it on my wart. I did this a couple of times a day, and within a week it was gone. It had something to do with the reaction between the vinegar and the sulphur in the match - it didn't sting at all though. Might work with the black tipped matches, but I'm not sure.

The most effective way is using liquid nitrogen to freeze off the wart. The hard part is getting a hold of liquid nitrogen. If anyone knows where, I'd be happy if they let me know :)

Plus you can play with the liquid nitrogen after you've finished treating the wart :D

yes liquid nitrogen is the best way, you can get it from the gp but then again do you want to pay 50-60 euros for an appointment.

if you do get liquid nitrogen don't store it in a plastic bottle...:)

well my father is a farmer and uses liquid nitrogen! nice one. should i be very careful with it though? what should i store it in and how often should i put it on the wart?

Hell no :) (And people wonder why twenty-something year olds are so reluctant to go to the doctor about problems).

I used to get it from my dad who works in the physics department in UCC. Might ask me to get him some next time I'm home for the weekend. I just keep forgetting to bring a flask with me :) I've noticed NUIG chemistry department sells liquid nitrogen, but I'm not sure if you need to be a student there to buy some.

erm if your dad uses it he'll know how to store it properly.

i saw on tv when someone poured liquid nitrogen into a bottle and closed it, it explodes as the gas expands (it was a pretty big explosion too).

i'd imagine (i ain't no doctor here) but i would only apply it to the wart and nothing else (the other products like wartner and salacintol advise this).

The way my dad used to use it was to dip a cotton bud into the nitrogen, and take it out again so that no liquid nitrogen remained on the bud but the bud was still extremely cold, and then pressed the bud against the wart. Used to sting like crazy but the wart was usually gone in one application.

We tried chemist stuff before but it involved a month's worth of treatment and sandpapering, plus having to have bits of plastering around the wart for the month. After that I decided having a minute's worth of pain to get rid of it was the better option :)

thanks for letting me know. id have gone off and put it in a bottle and probably blown my arm off! lol

must get on to the old man and see if he has some at the mo. i hate the smell of it.

Interesting bit on wikipedia about wart treatment:
Recent developments in wart treatments suggest that the stomach ulcer drug Cimetidine (Tagamet) can be used to completely cure the body of warts, and although the evidence is mixed, positive studies have shown it to be 80% effective. The drug convinces the immune system to fight the warts; hence, they do not return.

    Sounds kinda cool.

Although seriously, I don't think common warts can be spread through direct skin to skin contact, the virus seems to be airborne so it's totally luck of the draw whether you get them or not.
