Hard drive upgrade - using Ghost

Trying to use Ghost 9 to upgrade my laptop hard drive. Connected the new one via USB and successfully used 'copy one drive to another', everything transferred over OK, made sure to 'Set drive active (for booting OS)' and 'Copy MBR'. Now when I replace the internal drive with the new one, it boots up as far as the XP login, but after a large pause and the login noise, it goes into a cycle of 'shut down noise', 'Windows start noise' etc. ad infinitum. Any ideas? Sony Vaio R600 with XP. Old drive 40gb in two partitions (only copied C:, reckoned I can copy D over manually later as there shouldn't be anything essential on it), new drive is 60gb.

Have you tried starting in safe mode to see wher it stops?
Had you any software installed on D partition that might be affesting the registry?
Did you verify the ghost image after writing?

Safe mode doesn't work, there is a similar flickering back and forth. No software on D, although "My Documents" is there, I don't think this would cause it though. No, didn't verify the ghost image.

sounds a bit weird that. have never used that method myself (usually ghost and restore to/from network or external drives) but maybe you'll find something at this site http://ghost.radified.com/ .I find it very good for all sorts of ghost related trouble shooting. Check it's forums as well

Thanks for the replies, decided to go for a reinstall instead, additional advantage that it will get rid of three years worth of crud-buildup. Worked great, reinstalling applications today...
