I don't know the router but a couple of question may help.

    1. Can you ping the router IP?
    2. Have you tried resetting/rebooting the router ?

sorry noob:P but yea resetted router ping router???

I am assuming you don't understand ping.

A command to see if your machine can "see" the router on the "network".

Open a DOS window and type
    ping 192.168.1.1

    You should expect

    Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=254

If you get "host unreachable" or "request timed out" then machine may not see the router. Try a machine reboot.

If your problem persists then I defer to people who know the router and may know the problems with it.

    Open a DOS window

    type in ipconfig /all

Somewhere in all of that you may see "DHCP enabled"
If that says yes then type the following.

    ipconfig /release

    followed by

    ipconfig /renew

Then try your router URL again.

You could also try disabling and re-enabling the connection in Network Connections (right click on the connection, it's one of the options) and try the URL again.

If that doesn't work then I'm afraid someone else will have to jump in . :)

I've one of those routers - though since it's been a while can't really remember how I set it up.

Think you're recommended to connect using an ethernet cable first (not wireless), make sure the cable isn't connected to the router port marked WAN, use one of the ports numbered 1-4, check that the LED for that port lights up when the cable is connected. Assume you're trying to contact 192.168.11.1 since that's the default address.

If you show us the output of "ipconfig /all" it'll help us see what's wrong.

Couple things could be going wrong asides from cabling, your PC may have a static ip address, and if so it's unlikely to be suitable so you'll have to change it to something like 192.168.11.2 or use DHCP instead.

Also your PC may be setup to get it's address via DHCP - and possibly the DHCP server in the router isn't on by default. If you're using DHCP and it's failing - ipconfig will tell you you've an address like 169.xx.xx.xx if that's the case then I'd try setting a static ip address of 192.168.11.2 mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.11.1.

Here's some Microsoft help on setting your IP details, this tells you how to turn on DHCP (automatic addressing), but once you get to that window you'll see how to fill in you're own IP address instead of DHCP.

To configure TCP/IP for automatic addressing
    Open Network Connections.
Right-click the network connection that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (all other connections), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
Click Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.
    Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this procedure

there is windows ip configuration details and ethernet adapter wireless network connection 2 details, ill just give you the ethernet details ok? the output of ipconfig all is as follows:
    physical address

what would you like out of the details of ipconfig/all??
    there are no xxx anyway

With the xxx I meant any digit, on windows the first 3 digits of the IP address would be 169 after a failed DHCP attempt, I can't remember what the other digits are but they don't matter.

There's no privacy concerns about these values so you can print the entire output, but all that needs to be seen is if Autoconfiguration is enabled and your Ip address, subnet mask and gateway, so you can remove the other lines if you prefer.

    auto config enabled- yes

    192.168.11.2- ip address
    255.255.255.0- subnet mask
    192.168.11.1- default gateway

That looks fine, so you are using DHCP and the router is giving you the a suitable IP address.

Can you ping 192.168.11.1, just type "ping 192.168.11.1" it should work since you got your IP address. Normally you'd then access the web page by typing 192.168.11.1 in your web browser, if not type "http://192.168.11.1". The webpage works in both IE and firefox so the type of browser you use shouldn't matter.

There's a possiblity that if you've a firewall running on your PC that they could be set up to block pings. Wouldn't expect it to block access to the webpage, but still would be worth turning it off temporarily if you're seeing issues. You can probably switch it off in the windows firewall control panel.

already have it off, no luck though:(

Doesn't look like you've done anything wrong - hope it's not a dud unit, suppose you've tried rebooting the router already. Is there a reset button on the router that you can press in case there's some setting after disabling configuration, the reset would put all the settings back to default, can't check my own unit at the moment but I think there's some method for resetting it.

What error if any is displayed when you try to connect? Maybe have a look at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware/reviews/2003/q4/buffalo-airstation54.asp to see if you get some info there.

Is There A Firewall Which I Did Not See??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22 wheresmejumper

last try - since there's nothing wrong with the router, do you have 2 networks on your PC, maybe a wireless and ethernet. If so disable all but the ethernet cable network. Possibly your http traffic is going out the wrong network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

how do i do that????????????????, i did notice though that if i hit properties on wireless connnection 2 and then go to wireless networks tab and click properties on my preferred network and go to authenticication that all of the options are non slelectable and there is a ! mark and says sumtin like this cannot operate on peer to peer netwoprks or on networks where data encryption is disabled, something like that....... is this the problem??????

christ learn how to speak english will ya! ;-)

Well it shouldn't mess up your connection if you follow the instructions. But there's always sods law. Best thing is to write down your current settings and note any changes you make. so if it goes belly up u can backtrack to when it was working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

    ok, thanks
also, limewire stopped connecting not directlyafter i had my wireless connection setup but after a few days maybe a week it stopped connecting, could this be the program stopping because of a delayed reaction to a different setup or did i change something, as it detectes a firewall, and i have xp sp2 and norton and maybe other firewalls, but can some one help me try resolve this problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Again with the English! Try breaking that last post into sentences. Using fullstops. ;-)

No idea. I think Limewire is causing you more headaches then its worth.

Flogging a dead horse and all that.

i moved the topic over to the thread "problem"

so please continue there, i am not sure if port forwarding would work or not

could you recommend another program instead of limewire? maybe that you use ureself?

No. I don't use P2P software. They're mostly full of illegal downloads so I don't bother.
