Poker Bots?

For those who care, the below post does not discuss tactics or strategies. Nor is it a bad beat post. So if either bothers you, rest easy!

Just finished a STT on Stars, one of the $12+1 6-handed NL tables. When we were down to three, one of the other two players asked me if I thought the third player was a bot. It hadn't even entered into my mind, as I was multi-tabling and reading a book. However, the more I examined 'his' play, the more suspicious I got. The other player was knocked out, so it was me against the suspect player, who had his chat turned off. Many of his decisions were made instantaneously (at least this is how it seemed to me), I would hit check, raise, whatever and instantly the player would call, raise or fold. Every time he got below 8xBB he would go all-in instantly. Fair enough, but honestly, there was no time taken at any stage in deliberation! Didn't catch him bluffing once. I won in the end but have send an email to Stars support on the issue and requested speedy feedback. Anyone know of instances when bots were used / caught on any of the sites? I thought they weren't sophisticated enough to be used, let alone get second in a STT and double their investment!

P.S. If anyone wants this player's Stars nickname, PM me

Certainly sounds suspicious Paul. I know a friend of mine nabbed one on Full Tilt about 6 months ago in a $10 SnG, but because he took for ever to make every decision and wouldn't answer the host in the chat.

I was reading up on this recently and it looks like it will only take another 2-3 years before the low limit tables will be full of them. Phil Gordon played against a sophisticated university project sponsored one recently. He won but only after a number of long sessions.
I'm sure afew here have links to interesting articles about it.

Big Warning: Poker Bots are not a thing of the future, they are very much a thing of the present and are virtually unbeatable. A secret pokerbot company developed a pokerbot about two years ago and it has been ravishing the world of poker. Its it code named the AB2005 and is very very real, almost unbeatable and has amassed a huge amount of cash over the time period that it has been let loose on the poker circuit. Better known sometimes as Andrew Black it can look through its upsidedown robotic eyes and almost announce your cards before you even get to look at them.....be afraid be very afraid lol.... :D

Paul when you won the game and said GG at the end - did it reply "I'll be back" as that's the give away. :D

No, but it did say 'Danger, danger!' a couple of times! Maybe I've finally gone off the rails, but will let y'all know what Stars support have to say when they get back to me.

Although conerning I would be really surprised if this was a bot. I would also be surprised if the major poker sites/companies have not been tracking these developments and testing them themselves in a demo enviornment. Even though the majority of money lost/won online is by the player and not the site itself they obviously would not want the bad publicity bots would attract.

Having said all that, if it transpires that they do exists it could eventually end online poker as we know it.......... No more bad beat stories on borads then........every cloud has its silver......etc :D

So this is the reply from Stars Support:
    Hello Paul,

    Thank you for your email.

We take the integrity of our games very seriously here at PokerStars
    and
look into any report or claim such as the below. Firstly let me explain
    the
silence from the other side of the table. 'villian' had his chat
    revoked
for 6 months so was therefore unable to respond to the comments such a
    'nh'.

I have looked through the entire tournament archive and do not believe
    this
player to be a bot in the slightest. There were actually many instances
where the player took plenty of time to consider a decision which would
    not
be characteristic of a bot. You also need to bear in mind some of these
instantaneous decisions will have been made by pre-selcting an option
    such
    as fold etc.

I have included a couple of snippets below - and there were many where
    the
player did take time to consider an action.

I hope that this has helped alleviate any concerns that you may have
    had
with regards to the player but feel free to email us at any time with
reports such as this and we will always conduct a full review into it.

Please let me know if you wish to dicuss further.

    Regards,

    Ed

    11:17:59 RiverDwellin: raises 60 to 90

    11:18:00 zfrey: folds
    11:18:02 ionapaul: folds
    11:18:10 villian: calls 60

Guess I was mistaken. Very strange play, all the same.

Just so everyone knows it is possible to buy Poker-Bots on-line right now, doubt they work or are much good, in fact it's probably just a scam, but who knows.

I've also heard about a tournament that took place between different Poker-Bot programmes to see which one was the best. Don't be thinking these are some kind of Urban Myth, they're alive and working at the moment, whether they're making money or not yet I don't know.

There was a post here a couple of day ago about poker players and their no-poker playing partners and all the problems that arise from such a relationhip, now this is just an idea off the top of my head that Im throwing out there....but....what if they made the pokerbots in the form of a blow-up doll, you know...maybe a nurse for the guys and a nice white sailors uniform for the ladies......it would definitely sort out a few problems, AND....you would have a partner for life!!!!!!! "Oh Nurse, Oh Nurse....AK suited, what should I do?"

"The University of Alberta’s Computer Poker Research Group has developed an artificially intelligent automaton known as “Vex Bot,” capable of playing poker at the master level, though as yet it can only apply its gambling genius to two-player games. Vex Bot has been used by researchers to test the frontiers of artificial intelligence – and as the basis for a commercial poker tutorial program, Poki’s Poker Academy -- but some fear it may become a blueprint for programmers with more sinister motives."

They point to the handful of commercial products that purport to give online players significant advantage, which they roundly deride as woefully inadequate, as proof today's bots are no match for humans.

I can see how a poker bot might have a chance when playing heads-up poker but there's no way that a bot could make money at a full table, especially at the level where the money at stake becomes significant, there's just too many variables and people thinking and doing things that don't make sense (to the bot at least).

It would be easier to programme a bot for PL Omaha than Hold'em. Give it a list of starting hands, and then a list of betting patterns depending on whether it flops a draw/made hand or combination of the two.
