A question about WPT on Challenge

So I had AA and this tool calls me with 52o...

Nah, just kidding. I've been watching the WPT finals (last year's I think) on Challenge and I was just wondering if non-poker watching virgins can tell me something about the 2 commentators.

They're seated v.close to the players and are revealing the hands ("he's got a Q high", "he just needs a club", etc), so I would assume they can't be heard. On top of that, they have convenient asides with Shanna Hiatt (yum) that occur just after a hand that illustrated the point (Erickson shows a bluff, so they have a segment about showing hands after the win). I assume these are recorded, presumably after the game. From this I surmise that they're entire shtick is recorded.

So why are the 2 boys there at all? A guy walks around with a mike stating the hands, etc, so the 2 lads seems superfluous. I was hoping brighter people than me might know, and I suspect a couple of them might be here.

ok, you two win the prize for taking a thread to weirdsville faster then anyone I've ever witnessed.

Corblimey, I'm not sure what you are talking about to be honest. I have reported on these events (just back from the WPT in fact) and dont know which guys you are referring to...

Eh methinks it might be Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patton who are presumably there so as to appear on the TV as being there and I'm sure the audience expects them to be there. They can probably also make comments to themselves and use the material later on when editing with the knowledge of the hands.

Yeah, I meant Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten. It's weird that I went to the trouble of looking up the spelling of Shanna, but couldn't be bothered with the 2 lads.

I would find it weird if I went to an event, and there were these 2 guys sitting off to the side behind a desk just basically talking to each other :D

You looked up the spelling of Shana Hiatt and still spelt it wrong! :)

    (Sorry for being pedantic)

Yeah like he looked up Miss Hiatt to check the spelling :D

The guys would not - for the most part be heard by the players. TV mics are very sensitive so although the level appears loud it isn't. They are also on a delayed feed. This would mean that the hand is played out slightly in front of them say by about ten seconds. So that they can comment on the hand as if live... Then of course the delay is removed for a showdown. [If you notice on the wide shots the commentary doesn't always match. Unless it's between hands.]

After that you would use ADR [to re record the commentary in the parts where it would be needed.]

Shana's bit's are inserts filmed at any time.

I believe Shana is leaving before the next series  Just have to tape the Aruba eps and watch them over ;)

As far as I know they comment live, but without knowledge of the hole cards. Then in post-production they do second commentary with knowledge of the hole cards. Bits are taken out of both and mixed together to give the final version.
